Tutorial Condensation

This document provides information about three different condensation scenarios. The first involves ethanol condensing on an array of vertical tubes maintained at 30°C. The second describes saturated steam condensing on a vertical plate maintained at 80°C. The third scenario is about steam condensing on the outer surfaces of horizontal pipes through which cooling water circulates at 30°C in a steam power plant operating at 7.38 kPa. The document asks to calculate rates of condensation and heat transfer for each scenario.

Tutorial Condensation

1.

A high-purity recycled ethanol from a biodiesel plant condenses at atmospheric pressure on the outside surfaces of the vertical tubes arranged in a 10 x 10 array. The tubes have outside diameter of 6.35 mm and a height of 1 meter. The tube walls are maintained at 30C by a water flow inside. Calculate the rate of condensation

2.

Saturated steam at atmospheric pressure condenses on a 2-m-high and 3mwide vertical plate that is maintained at 80C by circulating cooling water through the other side. Determine (a) the rate of heat transfer by condensation to the plate and (b) the rate at which the condensate drips off the plate at the bottom.

3.

The condenser of a steam power plant operates at a pressure of 7.38 kPa. Steam at this pressure condenses on the outer surfaces of horizontal pipes through which cooling water circulates. The outer diameter of the pipes is 3 cm, and the outer surfaces of the pipes are maintained at 30C. Determine ( a) the rate of heat transfer to the cooling water circulating in the pipes and ( b) the rate of condensation of steam per unit length of a horizontal pipe
