Unit: We Built a Zoo Lesson Plan Week 2 Tuesday: Tipos de animales Learning Target: 1.2.N.R.

b: Understand main idea of simple accessible written material in the target language such as textbook passages, age appropriate magazine and newspaper article/ advertisements, websites/ internets resources, and stories and poetry. 1.2.N.L.a: Demonstrate understanding of oral classroom language in the target language including directions, commands and requests. Students read the article Tipos de animales, about different kinds of animals once all the way through and summarize the reading directly after. Then students pair and share their findings. Then student pull out their sheets with the animal vocabulary on it and find words from the list within the reading. Students select words that are left over and compile a list of these words. Students use MAPS strategy to find the meaning of words without dictionaries or other aids. MAPS helps students use their knowledge of Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes to develop word meaning. This strategy is especially powerful and applicable in the study of Spanish because it is a Latin based language, and so there are many Latin word parts. The idea here is not so much that the students memorize word meanings from the readings, but rather that they begin to think about the fact that they can deduce word meaning without needing help form aids like dictionaries. I am essentially teaching them a valuable self-help strategy.
