Kenenisa Bekele
The dream, said Kenenisa Bekele before
the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris,
would be to break the world record on
his marathon debut. His dreams may not
have turned into reality at the IAAF Gold
Label Road Race, but his triumph in a
course record of 2:05:04 was far from a
nightmare.
Having won global titles on the
track outdoors and indoors, as well as on
cross country, road running was the only
area of distance running that Bekele had
not yet conquered.
Now it looks as though he is well
on his way to doing that.
Bekele and his agent Jos
Hermens had explained this week that
part of their reason for choosing this race
over any other is that Paris organisers
were able to build the race around Bekele,
whereas in London he would have simply
been one of the many other star runners.
Headed by three pacemakers
Abraham Kiplimo, Silas Kipruto and
Erick Leon Ndiema Bekele was one of
a large group of about 16 runners as they
went through 5km in 14:43 and 10km in
29:35, suggesting a possible finish time of
about 2:04:50.
The group had been whittled
down to 12 runners at 15km, which was
passed in 44:15, and it soon became
clear that they wouldnt hit the somewhat
optimistic pre-race target of hitting the
half-way mark in 1:01:40.
Instead they went through 13.1 miles in
1:02:09, still incredibly quick, and two of
the pacemakers dropped out, leaving nine
runners up front, including remaining
pacemaker Kipruto.
At 25km, passed in 1:13:53,
Kipruto dropped out which left Bekele
as the leader. Just two kilometres later,

According to a recent CAMH study on unhealthy
drinking statistics worldwide, the worlds
heaviest drinkers live in Europe and parts of SubSaharan Africa.
Unhealthiest Consumption
When it comes to unhealthy alcohol consumption,
people in Eastern Europe and Southern SubSaharan Africa topped the list. People who

My Suggestion:
Lydia, I understand your frustration. You
are not alone. My receptionist used to
have this same problem with her hair. So,
the trick is number one, if you have curly
hair you need to trim your hair every 812
weeks.
Roman Bekele
April 10, 2014
Hello everyone. Hopefully you are all
prepared for Fasica (Easter). I wish you
nothing but blessings and happiness during
this joyful time. I was very delighted to
receive a of couple responses from last
weeks column. I will try to answer each
question to the best of my knowledge.
Lydia from Kitchener asked:
I have naturally curly hair, but in the
middle of the day it gets VERY frizzy,
dry, and uncontrollable. I start off with a
nice style, and after a few hours it ends up
looking like a mess! Ive tried all kinds of
products and techniques, but still my hair
doesnt stay the way I want throughout the
day. What can I do to keep my hair from
frizzing?
Acupuncture points to
post-op comfort
Acupuncture is a cheap and safe
way of preventing people who have
just had an operation from being
sick or feeling nauseous. That is the
conclusion of a review of 26 trials
involving over 3000 patients.
Anna Lee of the Chinese University
of Hong Kong and Mary Done of the
New Children's Hospital in Sydney,
Australia, focused on trials that
studied the effects of "P6" treatment
- stimulation of the "pericardium"
(P6) acupuncture point on the wrist.
Patients receiving P6 acupuncture
were 28 per cent less likely to feel
nauseous and 29 per cent less likely
to be sick than patients receiving
sham treatments, such as insertion
of the needle at the wrong place or
pretended stimulation of P6.
They were also 24 per cent less
likely to ask for anti-sickness drugs.
Without treatment, post-operative
nausea and vomiting is estimated to
affect four out of five people who
have had anaesthetics.
In
head-to-head

Teff, Ethiopias
nutritious grain
By Elaine Gordon (Washington Post)
Although teff has been a staple of
traditional Ethiopian cooking for thousands of years,
this gluten-free grain is quickly climbing to supergrain status in our country. (Watch out, quinoa.)
Teff is a gluten-free whole
grain that, despite its size (about the size of a poppy
seed), is mineral-rich and high in protein. In fact,
the Whole Grains Council estimates that Ethiopians
get about two-thirds of their dietary protein from
teff. And long-distance runners from Ethiopia have
credited their energy and health to the grain.
One serving of dry teff (a quarter-cup)
offers 7 grams of protein, 4 grams of dietary fiber, 25
percent of your daily recommended magnesium, 20
percent of your daily iron and 10 percent of your daily
calcium, Vitamin B6 and zinc.
Teff has a mildly nutty
flavor and is incredibly versatile. When cooked on
a stovetop with water, it creates a creamy product
similar to porridge or cream of wheat that would be
a nice twist on the usual hot breakfast cereal options.
It also works wonderfully in stews, adding both
thickness and texture.
In Ethiopia, teff is ground into a flour
and fermented to make injera, a spongy, sourdough
flatbread that is soft, porous and thin like a pancake.
Traditional Ethiopian restaurants serve injera with all
meals as an edible serving plate topped with meats,
vegetables and sauces.
As America embraces this ancient grain,
teff can be found in gluten-free recipes for pancakes,
breads, crepes or waffles and is showing up in
products such as cereal, snacks, wraps and more.
Nutrition facts:
Nutrient-packed bran and germ make up
the majority of the teff grain, which is why the nutrient
content is so high compared with more common
grains. Teff offers the most calcium (1 cup of cooked
teff offers 123 milligrams, which is equivalent to half
a cup of cooked spinach). And most grains dont offer
Vitamin C, but teff is an excellent source.
Plus, according to the Whole Grains
Council, teff is high in resistant starch, a newly
discovered type of dietary fiber that can benefit bloodsugar management, weight control and colon health.
Recipe: Southwest teff burgers
This recipe is a spin on the standard veggie burger.
Teff serves as a binding agent, and roasted sweet
potatoes, black beans, oats, onions and scallions
make up the rest of the dish. The burgers are loaded
with Southwest flavor from fresh cilantro, lime juice,
garlic, cumin, agave nectar and jalapeo pepper. They
are baked (more healthful than pan-frying), making
them slightly crisp on the outside and slightly moist
inside.
Serve the burgers with whole-wheat or
gluten-free buns and your favorite toppings. Theyre
also great served on a salad or in a lettuce sandwich.
Or simply dip them in guacamole.

have shown that putting a cheerful smile on your face can trigger
a part of your brain that actually makes you feel happier and more
optimistic about the present and future.
Also, feed your optimism with positive reminders. Write down short
statements that inspire optimism. Put them in places where youll
see them every day, such as on your bathroom mirror, the inside of
your locker, and on your computer monitor.
Anything is possible.
Lead a life of positivity.
The only thing I can control is my attitude towards life.
I always have a choice.
Even the longest journey begins with a single step.
I will look at the sunny side of everything and make my optimism
shine.

6. Work on the things you can control.
Pessimism is impractical because it causes you to spend time dwelling
on negative things that havent happened yet, while simultaneously
preventing you from getting things done now. Pessimism breeds
indecision. Its a waste of time, and time is a limited resource that
you cant afford to take for granted. Every minute spent worrying
guarantees nothing but less time to enjoy what life has to offer.
The solution? Acknowledge the things you cant control and dont
become a victim. Stop thinking about what is happening to you,
and start thinking about what you can do to make it better. Know
that you almost always have a choice. Is your job a bummer? Find a
new one. Not ready to leave because of your 401K and vacation time?
Then celebrate those reasons and remember that you chose to stay.
7. Count your blessings.
There is so much good, so much beauty, so much love in your life. You
have so much right now to be thankful for, you just need to pause
long enough to appreciate it. Do so. This will help frame a better
attitude and take your mind off of the negatives.
Start a feel-good journal. Buy a blank journal and fill it with things
that make you smile, like a photo of your pet, or a compliment a
friend gave you. Use it to track your accomplishments and celebrate
your victories. Stick only positive things in your journal and open it
up whenever youre feeling down.
8. Appreciate that nothing in life is permanent.
Research has shown that optimists and pessimists attribute the
reasons for success and failure differently. Pessimists tend to
attribute negative events to permanent, personal, and pervasive
factors. Optimists tend to attribute negative events to nonpersonal, non-permanent, and non-pervasive factors. Permanent
are factors that will be with you throughout life; personal are
factors that relate to us as individuals; and pervasive are factors
that affect our ability in other parts of our life.
Bottom line: Nothing is permanent. However good or bad a situation
is now, it will change.
9. Focus on the present.
People often obsess themselves with the past and the future. But
life is happening right now. You cant learn something or remember
something thats happening now if your mind is stuck in another
time.
It takes about eight seconds of intense focus to process a new
piece of information into your long-term memory. So dont let your
life and your mind slip away. Instead of dwelling on the past or
worrying about the future, practice being and living in the present
moment. Remember, right now is the only moment guaranteed to you.
Right now is life. Dont miss it.
