Introductory lesson to Idioms

Name: Whitni Pienezza Date: 1/11/14 Grade Level: 3rd grade

1. Content Objective(s)/State Standards: Language Standard 5; a. Distinguish the literal and nonliteral meanings of words an phrases in context Behavioral Objective: Students will be able to match and explain idioms and their meaning with a partner. 2. Instructional Focus: Students to become formula and understand the meaning of idioms.

3. Interesting Texts/Materials for Instruction What text(s)/materials are you using for your lesson? Talking Turkey and Other Cliches We Say by Nancy Loewen 4. Student Engagement: What engagement principle(s) are you choosing for this lesson? ________choice, ____x_____collaboration, ___x_____building concepts, ________relevance real world interaction I will engage students in this lesson by: Reading students Talking Turkey and give them cards to match up with a partner and share to the class. 5. Student Activity/Differentiation. What will your students be doing to meet the purpose of your lesson? (listening, reading, searching, writing, strategy instruction, group work, etc.) What my students are actually DOING: Before, During, and After. Before: I will ask students if they have hear of an idiom, and what that means? Once we have discussed it I will put up the anchor chart. I will then read the book Talking Turkey to help build background knowledge. We will discuss some of the idioms we heard in the book. During: I will then pass out a card to each kid. Half of the cards will have an idiom, and the other half a definition. Students will have to travel around the room finding the match of the idiom. Students in their groups will read the idiom and the definition. If we have time students will make predictions of what they think it means, before we read the definition.

How will you differentiate your instruction for struggling/gifted students? Students who finish first can help other students who are struggling.

6. Writing/Communicating/Assessment: How will you know students have met the purpose of the lesson? What will students do to record their understanding? Students will write in their composition book an idiom they have never heard before. They will show this to me to be check off. 7. Reflection: Strengths? Improvements? Be specific.
