Introduction To The Notion of Limit

The document introduces the concept of limits and describes three methods for determining limits: 1) The graph method uses the graph of a function to determine the limit as the input approaches a certain value. 2) The table method evaluates a function at inputs close to the target value and organizes the results in a table to see the trend. 3) The algebra method directly substitutes the target value for the input in the function.

3)Algebramethod

Thealgebramethodconsistsinreplacingthevalueofxinthefunction.
Example:determinethelimitoff(x)=x2+2x+3whenxapproaches3.
Solution:
Replacingxby3inthefunctionwegetlimf(x)=(3)2+2(3)+3=9+6+3=18.

Practice

Determinethelimitofthefollowingfunctionsbyusingthetableandthealgebramethod:

(a)f(x)=x+4(b)f(x)=x 2 + x+3f(x)= x+2

x whenxapproaches2.
