Design lessons so that you provide enough guidance to keep the process moving, but not so much that you intrude on initiatives and experiences Identify inquiry questions and learning objectives Identify a question for investigation Specify learning objectives Plan for gathering data Idea should come from students
Phase 1- Identify question The teacher or students identify a question that the students will attempt to answer Phase 2- Generate hypotheses Students generate hypothesis that attempt to answer the question Phase 3- Gather and display data Students gather data related ot the hypotheses and organize it so it can be analyzed Phase 4- Assess hypotheses and generalize The teacher guides a discussion of the results and the extent to which they support the hypotheses
Alternative assessment is best as it is a direct examination of student performance in significant tasks Preformace assessments such as systematic observations, rating scales, checklists, give feedback
Students are giving the leading role in this model, they come up with the hypotheses, the method of testing, and gathering data. They are in control of navigating the scientific process.
With this model we cannot forget that students are running the show with very little guidance, as to get involved with the scientific process and data gathering.
