Titanium Welding Trips and Tricks

This document discusses titanium, its properties, welding techniques, and essential tools for titanium welding. Some key points include: - Titanium is light and resistant to corrosion. It is sensitive to contamination from oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen during welding. - Acceptable welding processes for titanium include gas tungsten arc welding and pulse metal inert gas welding. - Tools needed for titanium welding include a gas flow slot, backing plate, lanthanum tungsten electrode, cleaning cloths, grinding discs, shielding cups, fire extinguisher, acetone, oxygen analyzer, and a closed humidity-controlled room. - The document provides an example of mock-up welding on a titanium base material

WHAT IS TITANIUM AND ITS APPLICATION

Titanium is light(2-2.5 lighter than carbon steel) ,strong resistance to corrosion

ESSENTIAL TOOLS
Slotted hole for gas flow

Aluminum backing plate for back purging

ESSENTIAL TOOLS

2% Lanthanum Tungsten Electrode

ESSENTIAL TOOLS

Lint free cloth for cleaning

ESSENTIAL TOOLS

Flap disc for grinding including base metal and tungsten electrode

ESSENTIAL TOOLS

Trailing shield cup (To be attached together with welding cup)

ESSENTIAL TOOLS

Class D fire extinguisher shall be used ( Titanium is highly explosive)

ESSENTIAL TOOLS

Acetone for precleaning of base metal and filler metal

ESSENTIAL TOOLS

Closed room to maintain humidity

ESSENTIAL TOOLS

Oxygen analyzer

PROPERTIES OF TITANIUM
Titanium when melts, it is sensitive to air contamination like oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen while the weld during solidification state around 450 deg cel. Welding process: Acceptable welding process for Titanium welding are GTAW, Pulse MIG welding. Limitations of Titanium welding: Titanium is not readily weldable with other materials like stainless steel, carbon steel etc. since it will produce intermetallic phases like TiFe which is very hard and brittle.

MOCK UP WELDING PROCEDURE

The following set up had been prepared to demonstrate the mock up welding qualification, Base material SB 265 Gr 2 Filler metal ERTi-2

Weld process- GTAW Filler size - Dia 2.4mm

Weld position 1G

Specimen set up
Sealed with masking tape to avoid oxygen entry( O2 level less than 10ppm)

Purging flow

Welding In process

Trailing shield gas cup

WELD VISUAL

Bad weld showing discoloration (Blue with gold)
