Unit 4 - Angles and Polygons
Unit 4 - Angles and Polygons
Essential Questions: Angles can be compared, measured, and constructed using non-standard measuring tools and standard protractors. Angles are measured in degrees. Angles can be classified according to their measures. Generalizations can be made about the sums of interior angles in triangles and quadrilaterals. Unit Summary: The purpose of this unit is for students to relate an angle to a turn by rotating a line segment about one of its end points. Students use non-standard units to measure angles, and then introduced to the standard protractor and the notion of a degree. Angle measures of 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 180 degrees are established as reference angles for estimating angle size. Students estimate, measure, and classify right, acute, obtuse, straight, and reflex angles, and identify examples of these angles in their environment. Students use a protractor to construct angles of given measures. Students also investigate the sum of interior angles in a triangle and quadrilateral, then use what they learn to determine the sum of the interior angles in a quadrilateral. Students solve problems that involve the sum of the angles in triangles and quadrilaterals. General Learner Outcome: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of angles by: Identifying examples of angles in the environment Classifying angles according to their measure Estimating the measure of angles, using 45, 90 and 180 as reference angles Determining angle measures in degrees Drawing and labeling angles when the measure is specified. 2. Demonstrate that the sum of interior angles is: 180 in a triangle 360 in a quadrilateral
Lesson 1
Activities Introduce terms: angle, arm, and vertex. Introduce: Acute, Obtuse, Straight, Reflex, and Right Angles. Smartboard Lesson: Classifying Angles Students will be introduced to angles and we will do practice examples as a class. After students understand how to classify angles they will do a practice assessment. We will complete a quick review from the day before and students will complete an assessment using Smart Response. They will answer 10 questions and these grades will be recorded as a summative mark. Spy Guys Activity: Working With Angles Students will review classifying angles and then be introduced to using a protractor. http://www.mathplayground.com/measuringangles.htmlStudents will practice measuring angles with game. Students will measure angles and write their degree. Measure Acute, Right, Obtuse, and Straight Angles Practice examples on Smart Lesson: Measuring Angles. Students bring assessment to desk after each set completed to ensure everyone is on track. Review how to measure angles as a class and then students will do an assessment for marks. When students are finished they will hand in their assignment. Practice Website: http://www.mesc.gov.ws/ssn1/Golf/golf.htm Students will estimate the degree of an angle. They will then measure the angle.

Smartboard Lesson: Drawing Angles I will show students on the smartboard how to draw an angle. Students will then practice drawing angles with a partner. One student will write down an angle and the other will attempt to draw the angle as close as possible. Student A will check the angle and then draw the one student B requests. Do this practice until both students feel comfortable with drawing angles. We will review as a class. Students will then do a practice assessment. Students will find angles in the classroom. They will create a legend and then they will tell the class what the angles are and where they found them. Students need to create a piece of a quilt pattern. This pattern must include each of the following: acute, obtuse, straight, reflex, and right angle. Students need to create a legend for each angle (label each angle with a letter), and then write the measurement of each angle. We will create a quilt to hang in the classroom when everyone is finished.
Unit 4 Lesson 4 Discussion Formative Assessment I will grade their legend and poster. Students need to meet the criteria for assessment.

Students will draw a triangle in their math books with the following: One with a right angle One with an obtuse angle One with all angles acute. They will then record the measures in each triangle. Students will then cut out their triangles and rip off the corners with each angle. They will find when they put the corners together it will create a straight line each time. What does that suggest about the sum of interior angles of a triangle? We can use the sum of the angles in a triangle to find the third angle. Students will create a formula to calculate the interior angles of a triangle. To check if our answers are correct we can add up the three angles in a triangle. Students will do practice questions from textbook. Find unknown angles in a problem. Unknown Angles Lesson Plan

Make a Square, Rectangle, and another quadrilateral. What do you know about the interior angles? What is the sum of the angles? Break off the corners in the quadrilateral and attach the sides adjacently. What shape do they make?
