Scrolling: Frequently Asked Questions

Why did schools start scrolling? Danielson Domain 1- the expectations in Planning and Preparation require teachers to know the standards and derive curriculum from them with a cohesive plan How is scrolling different/better than long range planning or a scope and sequence? Develops a deeper understanding of the standards Authentic integration of content Ownership of curriculum Empowerment to make instructional decisions based on your students Flexible, but rigorous pacing (efficient and effective) Offers more opportunity for transfer (application of skills, not in isolation) How will the scrolls be used? On-going process post-it notes can easily be moved/added based on reflection Look ahead to the chunks of time to plan units/assessments Accountability- meeting the demands of CCSS Why dont we just use the work another school has already completed? Our scroll is unique to OUR students and OUR teachers There is great power in the process- professional conversations with colleagues We are professionals How will this work align with other county initiatives (FOSS, math units, ELA notebook, HM, etc.)? Our goal is student mastery of the CCSS, so the standards will be our primary focus. All other resources are simply resources. What is the value in scrolling? Process vs. product- diving deep into the standards Empowered to make decisionswhat can we teach more of?, what can we teach less of?, what can be integrated?, in choosing to do ____ what are we choosing not to do?, applying OUR students MAP data, what is the BEST resource to teach ___? How do we begin? Prepare: o Resources (CCSS, Standards, content framework, Calkins units, achievethecore.orgmajor and supporting clusters) o Know the expectations (Danielson FfT, SLOs, Literacy, STEM, MAP data, integration, on-going assessment) Writing: Calkins Units of Study Science and Social Studies Reading (ELA standards) Writing Math Look for chunks of learning to begin planning Learning Experiences Authentic opportunities forSTEM, SLO, PBL (project based learning), etc.
