Comparsion Between Distance Schemes

The document discusses various transmission circuit protection schemes and their limitations. It provides a table comparing protection schemes such as current differential protection, pilot-wire communication, directional comparison protection in permissive and blocking modes, distance protection without signaling channels, and others. For each scheme, the table lists limitations such as dependency on communications, lack of remote back-up protection, inability to detect series faults, sensitivity variations based on load, and limitations in zone reach for series compensated lines.

D-4: Application of Overreaching Distance Relays

Appendix D. Transmission Circuits Protection Schemes and Limitations

In order to determine transmission circuit back-up protection, It is important to evaluate possible mode of failure and any fault detection limitation. The following table provides some limited comparison between the various schemes available.

PROTECTION SCHEME

LIMITATIONS Dependent on communications Does not inherently offer remote back-up protection No detection of series faults

Current differential Protection

Pilot-wire Communication

Transverse Current differential Protection (Parallel Circuits) Directional comparison Protection (Permissive)

Directional comparison Protection (BLOCKING)

Limited to short lines No remote back-up protection No detection of series faults Requires permanent parallel circuits No remote back-up protection Sensitivity varies with load Dependent on communications No remote back-up protection Directional ground fault protection must be inhibited during single pole dead times. Security is dependent on communications No remote back-up protection Directional ground fault protection must be inhibited during single pole dead times.

Distance Protection without signaling channel (Multi-Zone) Distance protection with loss of load logic

Limited resistive fault coverage No detection of series faults Zone 1 reach may not be adequate on series compensated lines. Delayed tripping with communication failure Resistive fault coverage limited by zone 1 (zone 2 for permissive overreach blocking / unblocking overreach) No detection of series faults Zone reach limitation for series compensated lines.

Permissive Underreach Accelerated Underreach Intertripping Underreach Permissive Overreach with/without weak infeed logic Blocking/Unblocking overreach Phase comparison Protection

Limited applications only No remote back-up protection Not suitable for series compensated lines with current reversal.
