Analysis of Diegetic and Non-Diegetic sound Kill Bill Vol: 2

The film which sound I will be analysing will again be Kill Bill Vol: 2 the reason being that they have very good and creative scenes which use both diegetic and nondiegetic sound at a very high quality level. The scene which I will be analysing will be the buried alive scene which I briefly had mentioned when analysing the generic thriller conventions. ithin this scene I will be analysing the use of diegetic and non ! diegetic sound which have been merged together creating an intense and thrilling scene and overall movie. hen the bride Beatri" has been forced into the coffin and is being nailed into the bo" we witness the use of non ! diegetic sound which is a estern whistling ty#e of soundtrac$% this #articular music has a very tense feeling to it from the echoed dee# sounding which is being created through the different instruments we can hear be #layed. There is a contrast which we realise as we can hear each se#arate nail be hammered into the wood% one by one we feel the effect of each individual nail ma$ing the audience feel claustro#hobic similar to Beatri" herself. e hear the nails sound which feels very heightened and intensified. The use of this diegetic and non ! diegetic sound together is very effective as the #owerful mise scene of lighting and sound ma$es the audience feel li$e they are the character being tra##ed and im#ossible to esca#e% this is made certain to character and the audience as the final nail is hammered into #lace% it re#resents a &stam# of certainty'. (s we hear the final nail ta$e #lace in its s#ot and is secure the non ! diegetic sound which is the music in the bac$ground sto#s and leaves us very stunned by what is going on% when the music sto#s we hear Beatri" breathing very fast and heavily. The fact that they have decided to sto# the music in the bac$ ground and only let the diegetic sound #lay was a very smart and successful decision the reason being that it allows us to achieve the feeling of isolationism which she may feel and also a strong consistent sense of ho#elessness. )ther diegetic sounds which we hear are when the screen is dar$ and we are unable to see anything% we #resume that these noises are the coffins movement and also soil which is around her. *ollowing this we hear the sound of the burial which is very effective towards the audience% the sound of the soil is e"aggerated and we hear from Beatri"'s #oint of view li$e thum#ing thundering sounds of the mud which is being aggressively thrown on to the wood coffin. e hear the collaboration between the soil and wood sound together% at this #oint Tarantino does a very efficient +ob of managing to $ee# the audience on edge as they are very tense and the adenine #hysically feel this due to the sound techniques used to ma$e them feel that they are a #art of the situation. ,owever gradually as we feel when watching the soil build u# in the coffin we no longer hear the sound of the wood and soil but the com#act with the ground% this su##orts the idea of Beatri"'s condition.

)verall the diegetic and non ! diegetic sounds which has been used in Tarantino's Kill Bill has been very effectively and successfully used. (nd it is an analysis and film which I could relate to and gain ideas from when doing the wild trac$% soundtrac$% diegetic and non ! diegetic sound of my o#ening sequence.
