Machine Construction Spring 2013

The document contains a mechanical engineering exam with 4 questions. Question 1 involves calculations for a power screw including pitch, lead, torque required, and efficiency. Question 2 involves design of bolts and a flange coupling connecting an electric motor and pump shaft. Question 3 asks to calculate the axial force required to engage a multiple disk clutch and check if it can withstand the applied torque. Question 4 gives specifications for a machine shaft supported by bearings and asks to determine the necessary shaft diameter.

Mechanical Department Final Term Examination Subject: Machine Construction Semester: Spring Academic year: 2012/2013 Examiner: Dr.

Mervat Tawfik Time allowed: 2.5 hrs

Answer the following questions: Question 1: A power screw has 6 threads per 3cm, double threads and with a major diameter of 3cm. The coefficient of friction between threads is 0.15 while the coefficient of friction of thrust collar is 0.2.the collar mean diameter is 5 cm. The axial load to the power screw is 600 kg Required:a) Find the pitch and the lead of the thread b) Find the torque required to rotate the screw against the load c) Find the overall efficiency of the power screw Question 2: A flange coupling as shown in figure has the following dimensions: dshaft = 30 mm dh = 60 mm D = 120 mm t = 15 mm t1 = 8 mm

If the flange is required to connect the output shaft of an electric motor to a shaft of a centrifugal pump. The motor delivers 20 KW power at 720 r.p.m. The starting torque of a motor can be assumed to be 130% of the started torque. It is required to design the bolts and the flange, if the number of bolts are 4 and its allowable shear & compressive stresses are 35 N/mm2 & 100 N/mm2 respectively, while the flange allowable shear stress for the flange material is 20 N/mm2

Question 3: A multiple disk clutch has the following specification Number of discs on driven shaft = 2 Number of discs on driving shaft = 3 Coefficient of friction of lining material = 0.25 Inner diameter of lining material = 20 cm Outer diameter of lining material = 28 cm Maximum intensity of pressure = 0.85 kg / cm2

The power transmitted is 40 HP at 1500 r.p.m and should allow for an over load 20%.calcuate the axial force required to engage the clutch and check if this clutch could withstand the applied torque Question 4: A machine shaft running at 600 r.p.m is supported on bearings as shown in figure below.15 KW is supplied from the shaft through a spur gear located 250 mm to the right of the left bearing. The tangential force (ft) on the gear is 2400 N while the radial force (fs) is 870 N. The belt drive is 60o above the horizontal, the pulley weights 800 N. The ratio of belt tensions
