Some syllables have A LOT of sounds in only one little poof of air Write clump on poster paper. (tap out sounds and clap out syllable, they build on their own boards) Under it write 1. 5 sounds 2. one syllable Now, I dont eat chicken or red meat, but I do eat eggs and fish. one of my favorite kind of seafood is: Write the word Shrimp on the board. Clap out syllables Tap out sounds (5) They build as well. Write the same under. That one little poof of air is making our mouths say A LOT of sounds. Draw a spiderman symbol on the poster **do a firework clap.
Tuesday
Objective:
SWBAT understand words with one syllable can have a lot of sounds made from blends and digraphs.
Activity:
Students will participate in class discussion and marking their blends, digraphs, and syllables. Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.B Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes), including consonant blends. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.A Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words.
Lesson:
Echo: Connect to our long names/ nick names. Vowels have nicknames too. Their full name is A, the nickname for A is /a/. Go over long and short vowel sounds. Review of digraph and blends. What is each and an example. (Write on a plain white sheet of paper) Yesterday we learned Revisit the poster. Why these one syllable can be fooling. (you think it would be short but there are so many soundsonly one poof of air.) Well theres something more I noticed about these words that is special Lets look at Clump first. (See if kids can see the blend, and not only one but TWO of them in the beginning and end.) Mark the blends accordingly. Add a 3. under clump.. it has two blends. Now lets look at Shrimp See if they notice it has a digraph and blend but highlight the digraph and how it is special because it blends with an /r/ sound. Mark the words ** So not only do these short little syllables have 5 sounds they also are made of blends, digraphs, and possibly even both like in /shr/. Attach whitepaper on side of poster, draw a spider. highlight that although it is only one syllable, it is still powerful. Have students return to their seats, with a poem. Have them mark all the blends and digraphs. Debrief by sharing some words they found.
Wednesday

Students will participate in class discussion, and marking their own glued sounds. Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes) Lesson: Echo: /tr/ and /ch/ (relate to /dr/) Review glued sounds. (green and purple plain white sheet of paper.) What are glued sounds? Example. Review all glued sounds. What have we been learning about these tricky one syllables? Highlight multiple sounds, blends, and digraphs. Lets look at the word, Longer How many syllables is it? two. Discuss here, how we look at each SYLLABLE, and NOT each word. 1. glued sound mark accordingly attach white sheet of glued sounds. add a hulk symbol, highlight how one syllables can be more powerful than we think, by having our mouths say: a lot of sounds blend together consonants, glue three consonant sounds, or saying A LOT of sounds in one poof of air. Hunt for glued sounds around class. Mark them. Debrief by sharing words.
