12 Basic Principles of Animation

The document discusses the Twelve Basic Principles of Animation introduced by Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas in their 1981 book The Illusion of Life. The principles were developed based on the work of leading Disney animators in the 1930s onward and aimed to produce realistic animations that followed the laws of physics. While originally intended for traditional hand-drawn animation, the principles still apply to modern computer animation. The principles include techniques like squash and stretch, anticipation, staging, follow through, arcs, secondary action, timing, exaggeration, and appeal.
