Add Subtract Tutorial

To mentally add or subtract, break numbers down into place value. For example, to add 64 + 29, add 64 + 20 to get 84, then add the remaining 9 to get 93. Similarly, to subtract 48 from 63, subtract the 40 to get 23 then subtract the remaining 8 to get 15. Practicing breaking numbers into place values and mentally calculating piece by piece makes mental math easier over time.

Mental Addition & Subtraction

You can learn to add and subtract almost anything in your head. The trick is
to take advantage of place value.

To do this mentally, you actually add the 29 to the 64 in pieces. Remember

64 that 29 = 20 + 9. So 64 + 20 = 84. Now to add the 9, it is actually easier
 29 mentally to add 10 and take away 1. 84 + 10 = 94, and 94 – 1 = 93.

385 Again, let’s start with 385 and add the 267 in pieces. Remember that
267 = 200 + 60 + 7. Now 385 + 200 = 585. 585 + 60 = 645.
 267 Finally, 645 + 7 = 652.

63 Same thing, but with subtraction this time. Remember that 48 = 40 + 8.

63 – 40 = 23. 23 – 8 = 15.
 48

385 Start with 385. Take away 200, and we get 185. 185 – 60 = 125.
125 – 7 = 118.
 267

Now practice a few on your own:

87 324 495 52 437 782

 47  867  168  17  281  558

This is a learned skill that takes practice. The more

you do it, the better you will get.
