HW01-Truss Applications: Expectations

This document provides instructions for homework assignment 1 involving analyzing truss structures using the finite element method. It includes 3 problems analyzing different truss configurations and calculating displacements, reaction forces, stresses, and strains in the members. The homework is due on September 17, 2013. Students are expected to show their work, validate results graphically and statically, and provide observations about what they learned from solving the problems.

EM560: HW01

HW01-Truss Applications
Expectations:
List assumptions clearly. Show work (using proper notation & units). Start with the matlab scripts provided. Use the node & element numbers as provided, where provided. Validate your results, graphically, statically (including internal forces). Write a short synopsis of insightful observations, describing what you learned while solving the problem(s).

EM560: HW01 Problem 2.1 Consider the balcony truss shown in Figure 1. Set the force F equal to 1000 pounds. Assume each of the members is made from Douglas r with a modulus of elasticity of E = 1.90 106 lb/in2 and a cross sectional area of 12 in2 . Using the FE method, calculate: 1. the displacements at each node,
