    Anonymous donation allows Medal of Leadership scholarship to continue


    CEDAR FALLS, IOWA, Feb. 20, 2013 An anonymous $25,000 donation will allow the University of Northern Iowa to continue offering a scholarship with their Medal of Leadership, an award created by former University President Robert Koob of Hawarden, Iowa. This year marks the 10th awarding of the Medal of Leadership at UNI. The award is given to students who go above and beyond their day to day academic work to make a difference and be a strong leader. Among many other awards and scholarships, they will award the Medal of Leadership at an annual ceremony on Sunday, April 28 in the McLeod Center. The current University President Benjamin Allen comments about the event, It is an honor to have so many dedicated students at this university. I am proud to help select and reward eligible candidates. Koob accumulated 16 years of classroom teaching experience before returning to UNI as President of the university. He explains, I feel a necessity to help students achieve their goals in all levels of learning. Sometimes that means providing them with scholarship opportunities. His lifelong commitment to education is the reason he created the scholarship in 2003. About the University of Northern Iowa Originally called the Iowa State Normal School, the university opened in 1876. The university offers over 90 majors with a variety of other opportunities for students and faculty. With an approximate enrollment of 13,000 students, around 92% are Iowa residents. UNI is recognized as having a mission of sufficient scope to enable it to be a distinguished arts and sciences university with an outstanding teacher education program. A strong emphasis on general education creates well rounded and educated students. END
