Teacher Interview
? I do I Can lessons typically as a Mini Lesson with Guided Practice, then Independent Practice. We also have to upload our lessons to Google Drive so that when we have a walk through the administer is able to easily pull up our lesson and see what we are doing. Included in our lesson plan we must have the standard, our differentiation, essential questions, materials needed, in an I do, we do, you do form. Our subjects are done in blocks so I try to think of materials necessary and a way to easily transition from one subject to the next. What types of materials do you need available when you plan lessons? Just Google Drive since that is what we have to upload everything to. In what ways do you plan to accommodate individual differences in the classroom? I collaborate a lot with the EC teacher for some of my students as well as with the ESL teacher. We try to tier the standards so that everyone is on the same standard, just with a different variation as needed. A lot of my groups are data driven so that this is possible. Instructional Questions: What are some of your instructional challenges as a teacher? Finding resources! Sometimes I look at a standard and start planning and then I realize I dont have any resources, like What book am I supposed to use? I ask myself that a lot. I also think making units with the different levels of variation is really difficult, sometimes you need things set in stone, but then you end up having to speed it up or slow it down, so that is hard. The 2nd grade team tries to do a lot of their planning together, but I feel it is hard for all of us to get together in the short amount of time we are given and plan a well thought out lesson. What have been some of your instructional successes as a teacher? When the students and parents give me feedback, I find that most successful. That and integrating. I love integrating and I feel like it works best for the students. What do you consider essential characteristics for successful teaching? Collaboration, organization, staying on top of finding the best strategies, and being able to continuously evaluate you as a teacher and learner. I also think Classroom Management plays a big role, that can really make or break your success in the classroom. How often do your students receive social studies/science instruction? Social Studies is integrated with Literacy and we do Science two times a week. After we do this we will switch and do Science integrated with Literacy, then Social Studies two times a week. Are you satisfied with the amount of time that you currently allot for social studies/science instruction? Explain. Yes, we get our standards and objectives done. Plus they have Science Lab during Specials so they get to do the exploring in there as well. The students love it. What social studies and science topics/units will be studied during the second week of my clinical experience? What are possible goals/objectives I could address for my lessons? Do you have any instructional resources that would support these goals/objectives? We are about to introduce our Economics unit in Social Studies so you will be able to introduce that for us. That will be 2.E.1- Understand basic economic concepts 2.E.1.1- Give examples of ways in which businesses in the community meet the needs and wants of consumers. You could start us off by introducing wants and needs. For Science, we are working on the ear. We will be finishing up how to protect our ear and how sound is made through vibrations and begin getting into the anatomy of it. I have some resources that you could do with the class on standard 2.P.1- Understand the relationship between sounds and vibrating objects 2. P.1.2-
Summarize the relationship between sound and objects of the body that vibrate- eardrum and vocal cords. What does reading instruction look like in your classroom (e.g. readers workshop, basals, etc.)? What reading topics will be studied during the 2nd week of my clinical experience? What are possible goals/objectives I could address for my reading lesson? Do you have any instructional resources that would support these goals/objectives? We do Literacy groups during Literacy. I love having my students work in groups, I feel this really helps them and makes learning more comfortable for them. We do not use basals, the 2nd grade team found that students did not like them and found them boring. For your lesson, you can work on Character Analysis; the students will be working with synonyms and antonyms during their writing time so I feel that will kind of go with Character Analysis and then we can refer to it during our writing time as well. The standards you could work with could be RL.2.3- Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges and RL.2.7- Use information gained from illustrations and words in print/digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, plot. Classroom Management Questions: What motivation tactics do you use to ensure a desire to learn? We do a lot of classroom sharing out. The students really love being able to share their answers and their hard work. The students are also given Bravo Tickets when they do/act appropriately without having to be asked, on Friday I do a drawing and the students will get a chance to pick something out of our prize bucket. The students really love getting Bravo Tickets! I kind of do the same thing with Table Points, when a table is neat, quiet, and ready to move on I award them Table Points and the table with the most points at the end of the week gets Bravo Tickets as well. Our school gives Paws as an award to the entire class when they are seen doing well without being asked and performing as a class on a 2nd grade level. Students can get Gold Paws, worth 5 points and Red Paws, worth 1 point. When a class reaches their goal of 35 points, we get a classroom party; I feel this is the biggest reward to the students. They really love when one of their classmates or the class as a whole earn one of these Paws! Tell me about the classroom community. What are the class rules? How is student behavior monitored? In what ways is positive behavior reinforced? In what ways are negative behaviors prevented? Tell me about the consequences for negative behavior. We always raise our hands, the students know to do so and know it is rude to other classmates when they just call out. They are class jobs that the students take very seriously and this often holds the class very accountable. The Class Inspector and Line Inspector are often the two jobs that tend to keep the students in line most often. Positive reinforcement is of course the Bravo Tickets and Paws when earned. Negative Reinforcement includes students clipping down if it is just something small like calling out after being given a warning. Walking at recess, after continuous warnings I will start adding laps for recess, monitors other negative behavior. Often the students will receive a lap and that will typically stop their negative behavior for the rest of the day. They hate losing part of their recess! Tell me about the pacing of lessons and interaction in the classroom- use of time- and other aspects of timewait time, and time using teacher talk and student talk. What works well with your students? To quickly get through bathroom breaks and other wait times I try to set goals, I will time them while using the restroom and the boys will try to beat the girls to see who will get done faster and vice versa. For quick transitions I will count down, sing catchy songs and the students will need to be ready by the end of the song, and then of course table points. I also try to leave time between my topics so that I have enough time to conclude one topic before I begin moving on to the next one.
