The Order of Operations

Lesson 1

What are we doing today?

What is the order of operations?

How do we use it with?

Example questions

Order of Operations
The order of operations is the way in which we perform
mathematical operations such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.

It is also the order in which we perform any activity.

Without thinking about it, we use the order of operations everyday. Do you put your shoes on before you put your socks on? No! That just wouldnt be right, would it?

The Order

P-arentheses E-xponents M-ultiply Although multiply comes before divide, these two go in the order in which they come. For example, if the problem is 9 divided by 3 times 4, divide first and then multiply. D-ivide

A-dd The same rule we used for multiplying and dividing goes for adding and subtracting. If subtracting comes before adding, subtract first.

Khan Academy

This video gives a great brief introduction to the order of operations.

Acronyms
Acronyms are used to help us to always remember the
order of operations. Some popular ones are Pemdas and Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.

Can you think of any others? Jot them down in your

guided notes.

3x4+(8-2)x6
Step 1: (8-2) is 6, now substitute 6 in place of the
parenthesis. 3 x 4 + 6 x 6

Step 2: Multiply 3 x 4 and get 12. Substitute 12 in place of 3

x 4. 12 + 6 x 6

Step 3: Multiply 6 x 6 and get 36. Substitute 36 in place of 6

x 6. 12 + 36

Step 4: Add 12 + 36 and get 48. 48 is your answer

Do you think you will still get 48 if you dont follow the correct
order of operations? Think about it for a minute and write your thoughts down in your notes.

3x4+(8-2)x6 the wrong way

Now lets see what we get if we do the equation straight
across.

3 x 4 is 12 12 + 8 is 20

20 2 is 18
18 x 6 is 108 108 is not the same as 48! If you dont follow the
correct order of operations, you can the wrong answer!

8-3+(7+2) x 43
Now you try!

Write down your answer in the guided notes and make

sure to show your work!

If you need help, I have posted an audio walking

through the problem

8-3+(7+2) x 43 the wrong way

Step 1: 8-3=5

Step 2: 5+7+2=14
Step 3: 14 x 43 Your answer is 896! Why do you think it matters?
