Working principle
LOM process was developed by Helisis Inc. The company shipped the first commercial LOM system in 1991.
Manufacturing (LOM) is a rapid prototyping system in which, layers of adhesive-coated paper are successively glued together and cut to shape with a laser cutter.
Details of processes
Sheet is adhered to a substrate with a heated roller. Laser traces desired dimensions of prototype. Laser cross hatches non-part area to facilitate waste removal. Platform with completed layer moves down out of the way. Fresh sheet of material is rolled into position. Platform moves up into position to receive next layer. The process is repeated.
Advantages
Low cost due to readily available raw material Simple to use and no environmental concern Relatively large parts may be made, because no chemical reaction is necessary A potential for high manufacturing speeds. Components do not need support structures.
Limitation
Poor surface finish Although there is some choice of materials including paper, plastic, ceramic and composite, the most commonly used material is only paper. Others are still under development Difficulty in producing hollow parts. Dimensional accuracy is slightly less than that of stereolithography and selective laser sintering. Fire hazard is occasionally happened when the working chamber becomes too hot . the process is restricted to build complex parts
Application
Concept modeling . Used for large bulky models as sandcasting patterns . the main application range is the working area of conceptual design. silicon nitride turbine blades alumina biomedical filters
