Definition of Early Childhood Caries (ECC) : Originating Council Review Council Adopted Revised

Early childhood caries (ECC) is defined as the presence of one or more decayed, missing, or filled tooth surfaces in a primary tooth in a child aged 71 months or younger. Severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) is defined as any sign of smooth-surface caries in children under 3 years old. For children aged 3 to 5, S-ECC is defined as having one or more cavitated, missing, or filled smooth surfaces on primary front teeth or a decayed, missing, or filled score of 4 or more surfaces at age 3, 5 or more surfaces at age 4, or 6 or more surfaces at age 5.

Caries is a biolm (plaque)-induced acid demineralization of enamel or dentin, mediated by saliva. The disease of early childhood caries (ECC) is the presence of 1 or more decayed (noncavitated or cavitated lesions), missing (due to caries), or lled tooth surfaces in any primary tooth in a child 71 months of age or younger. In children younger than 3 years

of age, any sign of smooth-surface caries is indicative of severe early childhood caries (S-ECC). From ages 3 through 5, 1 or more cavitated, missing (due to caries), or lled smooth surfaces in primary maxillary anterior teeth or a decayed, missing, or lled score of 4 (age 3), 5 (age 4), or 6 (age 5) surfaces constitutes S-ECC.
