Aeraulic ED 1: Bernoulli: AB Aux 1

This document discusses using a venturi to measure fluid flow rate and determining pressure differences in ductwork systems. 1) A venturi can be used to determine fluid velocity based on pressure drop measured by a manometer. The relationship between upstream velocity and venturi diameters is derived. Using an auxiliary fluid in a U-tube gives a new velocity equation accounting for fluid densities. 2) Pressure differences in ductwork can be calculated based on fan delivered pressure, altitude changes, and pressure losses. Examples are given for air and water systems, calculating flow rates, pressures, and power consumption based on mechanical efficiencies. 3) In all cases, relationships between flow properties like velocity and pressure allow determining key system

1/ Velocity determination by means of a venturi We want to use a Venturi to measure the volumic flow rate of an incompressible fluid. The pressure drop is determined thanks to manometer. 1. Show that the upstream fluid velocity can be written as: u = K only of the two diameters of the venturi : K = while D2 is the Venturi diameter (1 cm). 2. For cost matter, the pressure drop will finally be determined thanks to a U-shape tube filled with an auxiliary fluid. a) Determine the new expression for the velocity:

P , with K a constant depending fl

. D1 is the upstream diameter (5 cm)

u1 = K

b) Evaluate the bias induced by the simplified relation stating that the pressure drop is equal to aux.g.z in the formulation found in question 1/ compared to the exact relation found in 2/ for an air flow with water as auxiliary fluid ( = 1 et 1000 kg/m3 respectively) and for a water flow with mercury as auxiliary fluid (1000 et 13550 kg/m3, respectively). In both cases, z = 5 cm. Conclusion ? 2/ Fan/pump delivered pressure determination We consider the following ductwork:

1) Find the analytical relation allowing determining Pm as a function of Pf and altitude difference (zS zE) 2) Calculate for the following cases: & = 500 m3/h and ducts of diameter DA = 150 mm and a) Air flow circulation with V DB = 400 mm. The pressure loss are equal to 3738 cm CA (cm of air with air = 1,2 kg/m3). & = 10 m3/h and duct of diameter DA = 40 mm and DB = 35 mm. The b) Water circulation with V pressure drop is equal to 960 mbar. 3) Calculate the power consumption in each case a) fan mechanical efficiency : = 0,7. b) pump mechanical efficiency : = 0,5.
