Narendra Singh Sarila was heir to the princely state of Sarila in
central India. An ADC to Lord Mountbatten, he later joined the
Indian Foreign Service, where he worked from 1948 to 1985. He
was a deputy permanent representative in the Indian delegation to
the UN. He also served as India’s ambassador to Spain, Brazil
Switzerland and France. He has been a commentator on international
affairs and has written for journals such as the International Herald
