Pre-Lab 1: Single Phase Diode Rectifiers: ECE401: Power Electronics

This document provides instructions for a pre-lab on single phase diode rectifiers. Students are asked to complete calculations for a full-wave diode rectifier circuit with DC-side capacitor filter and resistive load. The calculations include using an iterative method to determine voltage and current values, calculating RMS and peak output and capacitor currents, input power factor, and other circuit parameters. Students must complete the pre-lab calculations and submit them at the beginning of the lab period in order to participate in the lab.

Note: Every person must hand in a completed pre-lab at the beginning of the lab period, you will not be allowed to participate in the lab if you do not have the pre-lab completed. The prelab is worth 10% of your lab mark.

1. You are recommended to read chapter 12 and 13 in preparation for this lab as you may be doing the lab in advance of the lecture discussions. 2. For the Full-wave Diode Rectifier with a DC-side Capacitor-Filter and Resistive load circuit above do the following calculations in the space provided (show all your work). i. Use the iteration method template included on the following page to calculate , , and . (iteration template also included in Chapter 13 page 93 of the Course Notes) ii. Calculate the rms and peak of the output and capacitor currents ( , , ) iii. Calculate diode rectifier input power factor (PF). iv. Calculate the remaining parameters (show your work in the space provided) 3. Copy your answers from question 1 to the appropriate column in the results section of the lab manual. 4. Take a look at the Fluke 43B getting started manual available on eClass to become familiar with the Power Quality Meter used in this laboratory.
