Kinematics of a Particle

Review Question

Prepared by Hui Kar Hoou

Question 1

The acceleration of a particle traveling along a straight line is = (8 2) m/s2 , where is in meters. If = 0 at = 0, determine the velocity of the particle at = 2 m, and the position of the particle when the velocity is maximum. (Ans. = 4.90 m/s ; = 4 m)

Question 2

A ball is thrown with an upward velocity of 5 m/s from the top of a 10-m high building. One second later another ball is thrown vertically from the ground with a velocity of 10 m/s. Determine the height from the ground where the two balls pass each other. (Ans. = 4.54 m)

Question 3

The graph of the bullet train is shown. If the train starts from rest, determine the elapsed time before it again comes to rest. What is the total distance travelled during this time interval? Construct the and graphs. (Ans. = 133 s ; = 8857 m)

Question 4

The box slides down the slope described by the equation = (0.05 2 ) m, where x is in meters. If the box has components of velocity and acceleration of = 3 m/s and = 1.5 m/s2 at = 5 m , determine the components of the velocity and the acceleration of the box at this instant. (Ans. = 1.5 m/s ; = 0.15 m/s 2 )

Question 5

If the roller coaster starts from rest at and its speed increases at = 6 0.06 m/s 2 , determine the magnitude of its acceleration when it reaches where = 40 m . (Ans. = 6.03 m/s2 )

Question 6

If end of the rope moves downward with a speed of 5 m/s, determine the speed of cylinder . (Ans. = 20 m/s )
