This document contains exam questions for an Optical Communication course. It provides instructions to attempt 3 of the 5 questions. Question 1 asks about the working principle and efficiency improvement of a PIN photodiode. Question 2 asks for a short note on noise sources in optical fiber communication. Question 3 presents a scenario and asks the student to set up an optical power budget and calculate system margin.

NOTE: Attempt any three questions. Each question carries five marks. Q1. Describe the working & principle of pin photodiode. How its efficiency can be increased? Q2. Write short note on noise sources in Optical Fiber Communication. Q3. A 1550 nm single mode Digital fiber optical link needs to operate at 622 Mbps over 80km without amplifiers. A single mode in GaAs laser launches an average optical power of 13dBm into the fiber. (i) The fiber has a loss of 0.35dB/km. (ii) Splices with a loss of 0.1dB every km. (iii) Coupling loss at the receiver is 0.5dB. The receiver used an InGaAs APD with a sensitivity of -39dBm.Excess noise penalties are expected to be 1.5dB. Setup an optical power budget for this link and find the system margin. What is the margin at 2.5Gbps with an APD sensitivity of -31dBm. Q4. Write short notes on: (i) Regenerative Repeaters. (ii) WDM (iii) FDM (iv) TDM (v) OTDM Q5. What is the principle of working of Optical Time Domain Reflectometer? What are the limitations of OTDR testing?
