Over centuries, many artists and cultures have used geometric concepts to help them create their art. Geometric transformations are a great way to create interesting designs. In the 1840s, the industrial revolution brought dramatic changes to quilt making in North America. Commercial fabrics became affordable for ordinary people, and quilts made of repeated block patterns became a favourite of quilt makers. Many traditional quilts from that era used repeating geometric transformations and symmetry to add to their visual appeal. Geometric symmetry remains a popular design feature with todays quilters. Summative Task: Over the next week you will be trying your hand at this traditional art form. You will design a quilt block using a combination of squares, rectangles, triangles and/or other shapes of your choice. Your block should use at least 3 different colours. ! Identify the transformations (translations, rotations, reections) found in this quilted square.! Identify the transformations found in the overall quilt design above! How did this quilt designer use translations to create visual appeal to the overall quilt design? ! Identify the translations in the overall quilt design.
! Challenge: Now its your turn to design your own quilted square that you will repeat ! (translate) on the entire grid paper. Your quilt design needs to demonstrate:! !! ! A quilted square design that is transformed to create visual appeal to the ! overall design of the quilt.! ! ! At least 1 translation demonstrated in the quilted square and overall design of ! quilt.! ! the At least 1 reection demonstrated in the quilted square and overall design of ! the quilt.! !
Design
At least 1 rotation demonstrated in the quilted square and overall design of the quilt.
Summative Assessment: The Art of Transformations Learning objectives: Describe and analyze position and motion of objects and shapes; Identify and describe a single transformation (translation, rotation, and reflection) of 2-D shapes; Perform, concretely, a single transformation (translation, rotation or reflection) of a 2-D shape Name: ___________________ Class: _____ # _____

Presentation Challenge: Using your quilt design, you will create a multimedia presentation, using an App of your choice, to help someone new to our class understand the concepts of transformations (translations, reflections, rotations).
Why did you choose the overall design for you quilt? (think about your choice in shapes, transformations, and colours) --> Why did you choose the overall design for you quilt? (think about your choice in shapes, transformations, and colours) --> Identify and describe at least 1 translation in your quilted square and overall design and explain why it is a translation, including the arrow of translation --> Identify and describe at least 1 reflection in your quilted square and overall design and explain why it is a reflection, including the line of reflection and perpendicular line -->Identify and describe at least 1 rotation in your quilted square and overall design and explain why it is a rotation, including the point of rotation, rotation arrows, fraction of rotation, etc
Preparing your Presentation: 1. Take a picture of your artwork using Photo Booth. 2. Upload that picture to the App you choose to use for you presentation. 3. Plan out your script by identifying and describing the three transformations in your quilted square and overall design. Use your math notes and notes found on Edmodo to ensure you fully explain and show each transformation. 4. Use drawing tools on the App to support you the identification of the transformation and description. 5. Review the provided rubric with a peer and parent, and make any necessary revisions. 6. Upload your presentation to Edmodo to share with your teacher to be assessed.
