2chiff bases are important in diverse field;s chemistry o#ing to their biological activities 01<+1. =part from the biological activities, photochromism is another characteristic of these materials leading to its application in various areas such as the control and measurement of radiation intensity, display systems and optical computers 0)<*1. The tautomerism in the 2chiff base ligands plays an important role for distinguishing their photochromic and thermochromic characteristics 0/<111. t has been proposed that molecules sho#ing thermochromism are planer, #hile those sho#ing photochromism are non.planer 0121, both appearances being associated #ith a proton transfer 0)1. Tautomerism in 2chiff bases #ith 93 group in ortho position to the imino group both in solution and in solid state have been investigated by using spectroscopic and crystallographic techni8ues 013<211.
