Assignment 1

The document provides instructions for performing a static calculation of a bogie frame using finite element method (FEM) calculations according to the European standard EN 13749. The calculation requires determining interface forces on the structure from operational load cases, combining the forces, analyzing stresses caused by each load case, and assessing the calculated stresses against acceptable stress limits. It also provides data on rolling coefficients, bouncing coefficients, vehicle weight, bogie weight, wheel base, materials used, and bogie categories to be considered in the calculations.

& Motive Power Design (MEng 6402) Submission Date: Dec. 4/2013 Assignment-I
Perform static calculation of the bogie frame by FEM calculations in compliance with EN 13749 European standard; with the exceptional load cases representing extreme loads that might occur only rarely during the life of the bogie. The calculation procedure requires the following activities: a) b) c) d) Determination of the forces that occur in the interfaces of the structure Combination of these forces in the load cases representing operation conditions Analysis of the stress values caused by the application of every load cases Assessment of the calculated stress values comparing them to the acceptable stress limits.

Given Data Rolling coefficient = 0.1 Bouncing coefficient = 0.2 Vehicle weight = 58635 kg Bogie weight = 8430 kg Wheel base = 2750 mm Materials: Frame: steel UNI EN 10025 S355J2G3C Central transom: aluminium AIMg4.5Mn EN AW-5083 W28 Axle box: EN-AC-AI-Si-7Mg0.6 Bogie category: B-I for gr1 & gr2 B-II for gr3 & gr4 B-III for gr5 & gr6 B-IV for gr7 & gr8 B-V for gr8 & gr9 B-VI for gr10 & gr11 B-VII for gr12 Note: Make any other assumptions of relevant information for your calculation.
