January 28, 2014. 10:00 a.m (in EMS Lab) Instructions: Solve all problems. Provide explanation where necessary. The units of all quantities must be properly mentioned. Take 0=4107 H/m
Q1: Figure 1 represents the magnetic circuit of a relay. Coil has 500 turns and the mean core path is lc = 360 mm. Air gap lengths are 1.5 mm each, a flux density of 0.8 Tesla is required to cause the relay to operate. The core is cast steel. Use magnetic field curve for the respective material. a) Determine the current in the coil. b) Determine the values of permeability of core and relative permeability c) If the air gap is zero, determine the current in the coil for the same magnetic flux density in the core.
Q2: The uniform core made of cast iron is shown in figure 2. It has the following dimensions: lab=lbc=lcd= 4 cm; lek=3 cm; length of air gap= 0.5 cm
a) b) c) d)
Draw the equivalent magnetic circuit. Find I in the coil that is needed to establish magnetic flux of 20 Wb in the right leg of core (use magnetic field curve for the respective material). Find the inductance of coil. What happens to the inductance if the air gap is removed?
Q3: A two pole generator as shown in figure 3 has magnetic circuit with following dimensions: Material Average Length (cm) Cross Sectional Area (cm2) 400 400 400 200
Each pole Cast Steel 10 Each air gap Air 0.1 Rotor(Rotating part of generator) Silicon Steel 20 Stator(Stationary part of generator) Cast Steel 160 (circumference) a) Draw the equivalent magnetic circuit. b) How many Ampere-turns per pole are required to produce magnetic flux density of 1.1 Tesla in magnetic circuit (use magnetic field curves for the respective materials)? c) Calculate rotor's flux.
