2 Marks Question and Answer For BEEE - Internal Text - 1

1. The document discusses various applications of PN junction diodes including use in switches, rectifiers, clamping networks, clipping circuits, and demodulation circuits. 2. It compares avalanche breakdown and Zener breakdown, noting differences in doping, reverse bias voltage, and temperature coefficient. 3. Rectifier efficiency is defined as the ratio of output DC power to input AC power, while ripple factor is the ratio of AC to DC components in the output. 4. Rectifier in power supplies 3. Clamping networks used as DC restorer in TV receiver & voltage multipliers. 3. Clipping circuits used as waver shaping circuits used in Computers, raders, radio and TV receivers; 5. Demodulation circuits 2. Comparison of Avalanche breakdown and Zener breakdown : Avalanche breakdown heavily dopped junction reverse bios voltage is less than 6V Temperature coefficient is Negative The breakdown voltage decrease if the junction temperature increases Zener breakdown 1. lightly dopped junction 2. reverse voltage is greater than 6 V 3. Temperature coefficient is Positive 4. The breakdown voltage increase if the junction temperature increases.

1. 2. 3. 4.

3. Define Rectifier efficiency & Ripple Factor : Rectifier efficiency : The ration between the output DC power and the input AC power supplied to the circuit. Ripple factor : The ratio between the R.M.S. value of AC component and DC component in the ripple output. 4. Define peak inverse voltage (PIV) of a PN junction Diode : The maximum voltage at which the diode can withstand in reverse bias condition. Suppose Vm is the maximum voltage across the half secondary winding, the peak inverse voltage (PIV) is twice the maximum voltage across the half secondary winding. 5. Write the Difference between the PN junction diode and zener diode: PN junction Diode 1. It is lightly dopped 2. working in forward bios 3. Rectifiers in DC power supplier 6. State the advantages of bridge rectifier : 1. 2. 3. 4. Transformer with centre tap in secondary is not required Suitable for high voltage application Input power transformer of small size can be used the reduces the cost of the circuit. The current in the secondary of the transformer is in opposite direction in two half cycles. Zener Diode 1. It is heavily dopped 2. working in reverse bios 3. It is a voltage regulator.

7. Mention the advantages and disadvantages of Zener Diode : Advantage 1. It is simple in circuit Disadvantage 1. Due to large current flows avalanche multiplication or breakdown occurs the diode gets damaged 2. It is light in weight. 2. Used in smaller circuits that would It is more reliable and provides regulation not work with any larger form of over a wide range of current current. -o-o-o-o-o-
