Ps 2

1) A charge Q is placed at the center of a square with side length R. Q must equal -4q to balance the forces on the 4 corner charges of q, resulting in a stable equilibrium. 2) For a spherical shell of radius R with surface charge density σ: (a) the electric field inside (z < R) is σz/ε0 and outside (z > R) is σR2/zε0. (b) Gauss' Law gives the same results. 3) For a charge distribution with density ρ0e-|z|/t: (a) the potential is ρ0t and the field is -ρ0e-|

APPH E3300 Homework 2 Reading: Griths Chapter 2 Problem 1:

Due at 4 pm February 7, 2014

At each corner of a square of side R is a particle with charge q . Fixed at the center of the square is a charge Q. Find the magnitude and sign of Q so that the total force on the four particles is zero. With Q set at this value, will the system be in a stable equilibrium? Problem 2: A spherical surface of radius R has a surface charge density of . (a) Find the electric eld a distance z from the center of the sphere without using Gauss Law. Treat the case z < R (inside) and z > R (outside), and check your answer in the limit z R. (b) Find the electric eld a distance z from the center of the sphere using Gauss Law for z < R and z > R. Problem 3: A charge distribution has uniform density in the x-y directions and varies with z according to: (z ) = 0 e|z|/t where 0 and t are constants. (a) Find the potential V (z ) and the electric eld E (z ) (b) Sketch them clearly showing their behaviors in the regions |z | t and |z | t.

(c) In the region |z | t, the system should behave as if there were a uniform sheet of charge. Find the eective charge density . Problem 4: Two spheres of unequal radii contain an equal and opposite uniform charge density, . The spheres overlap but are not concentric. Find the electric eld in their common region. Problem 5: A thin rod 20 cm long carries a total charge of 1 1010 Coulombs that is uniformly distributed along its length. Find the strength of the electric eld at points A and B as shown in the gure below.

20 cm A 5 cm 6 cm B
