The Nazi party came to power in 1933. Under the leader Adolf Hitler they intensified the persecution of
Jews and other groups. On November 10, 1938 Kristallnacht was carried out which was a coordinated
attack on Jewish shops and properties along with attacks on Jews.
At the Wansee conference on January 20th, 1942, the Nazis decided on the policy of extermination of the
Jewish population of Europe. In 1933 there had been 9.5 million Jews in Europe. By 1950 there was only
3 million, the Nazis had killed a total of 6 million Jews. A further 5 million non-Jews were killed. This
included Gypsies, Soviet prisoners-of-war, homosexuals, communists, socialists and Jehovahs Witnesses.
With liberation (the freeing of the prisoners) by the allies, many of the survivors travelled home. There
was further emigration to the USA and to Israel. Three years after the Holocaust in 1948, the State of
Israel was created. The Jews now had a country of their own.
