Computer Aided Drafting: Dr. Majdi Alkhresheh College of Engineering Mu'tah University Lecture 4

This document discusses several AutoCAD commands used to modify objects and format drawings, including: - PEDIT to edit polylines by modifying vertices, joining segments, changing widths, and converting between straight and curved segments. - MIRROR to create a mirrored copy of selected objects across a specified mirror line. - EXPLODE to break compound objects like rectangles into individual component objects like lines. - LAYERS and LINETYPE to organize and distinguish objects in a drawing using different layers, linetypes, colors and other properties. Key layer functions include setting current layers, hiding, freezing and locking layers. The document also discusses linetype scale.

Note: lines can be converted to polylines using the command (Pedit), when prompted to select polyline, just select the line, it would ask you if you like to convert it into a polyine. Note: 3D objects can be created out of 2D shapes. Most of the time you need to convert the 2D shape into a polyine in order to be able to change it into a 3D object.

The rectangle (or any polyline) is a compound object consisting of a number of segments, however it is one entity. When exploded, the rectangle becomes 4 separate segments. Explode can be used with 3d solids to convert them into planes, and with blocks to retain the original component of the block ( the block conceot will be explained later).

Format/Layers
M:Format\ Layer T: C:Layer
Complex drawing contain :objects, dimensions & annotation, therefore layers should be used to organize objects of the drawing . Using the command allows you to add, delete, and rename layers, change their properties, or add descriptions. Click the icon Layer Properties Manager , it displays the Layer Properties Manger dialog box, where you can create a new layer , Delete Layer, or set Layer as Current Deleting layers is not allowed if the layer is: 0 layer, current or has objects. Some Commands Layer Properties Manager: On Turns the selected layers on and off. When a layer is on, it is visible and available for plotting. When a layer is off, it is invisible and not plotted, even if Plot is on.

Format/Layers
Freeze Freezes the selected layers. You can freeze layers to speed up ZOOM and PAN, and many other operations; improve object selection performance; and reduce regeneration time for complex drawings. Objects on frozen layers are not displayed, plotted, hidden, rendered, or regenerated. Lock Locks and unlocks the selected layers. Objects on a locked layer cannot be modified. Color Changes the color associated with the selected layers. Linetype Changes the linetype associated with the selected layers. Clicking the linetype name displays the Select Linetype dialog box. Lineweight Changes the lineweight associated with the selected layers. Clicking the lineweight name displays the Lineweight dialog box.

Format/Layers
Current layer:

is a layer that appears in the layer toolbar, in this example layer dim, when you choose to draw (line, circle, etc..) they will be drawn on current layer. But if you choose to edit (erase, move, copy, etc) all layer will be influenced. 1- below is a shot of a drawing without any controlling over the layers; green lines are for dimensions objects who exist on the layer dim

Format/Layers
When you choose to hide the dim layer, or freeze it, you will see the drawing without the dim layer as shown below.

The difference is that freeze is more powerful because the frozen layer will be unaccounted for by the hardware, so freeze layers that have hatch or 3D curved objects.

Format/Layers
When you choose to lock a layer, it will be uneditable, if you chhose erase comman and select by crossing the upper portion of the drawing, you will see that every ting will be erased except the dim layer, which is locked.

Note: Do not hide, freeze or lock a current layer. If you want to do so, make another layer current, then modify the targeted layer as you like.

Format\Linetype
M:Format\ Linetype T: C:Lt We use Linetypes to distinguish objects from one another visually and make our drawing easier to read. To assign a Linetype to the layer, select: Linetype from the Format pull down menu or by typing LT on the command line. (This will call the Linetype Manager dialog box as showninFigure1 below), Click on Load, (This will call the Load or Reload Linetypes dialog box as shown in Figure2 below), scroll down until you see the desired Linetype, Thenselectit, andclickonOK. Double click on the desired Linetype in the Linetype column of the newlayer, andclickonOK.(ThiswillloadtheLinetype wechooseand itsreadytobeused).
