Pathophysiology of Acute Pulmonary Edema: Heart Failure

Acute pulmonary edema occurs when increased cardiac output and left atrial pressure from heart failure leads to a rise in capillary pressure, causing fluid to accumulate in the alveoli, bronchioles and bronchi of the lungs. This serious fluid buildup in the lungs makes patients feel like they are drowning in their own secretions.
