Proxemics - Has To Do With The Study of Our Use of Space

This document discusses proxemics, which is the study of how people use space. It outlines the four areas of personal territory defined by researcher Edward T. Hall: public space from 12 to 25 feet for speakers; social space from 4 to 10 feet for strangers; personal space from 2 to 4 feet for friends and family; and intimate space within one foot for touching and whispering. Examples are given of how space usage differs across cultures, such as Saudis standing closer due to smaller social spaces, and Japanese passengers being pressed together on public transportation.

Proxemics has to do with the study of our use of space.

Personal territory - an important aspect of proxemics.

Edward T. Hall, a researcher, outlined the four areas of personal territory.

1. Public space ranges from 12 to 25 feet and is the distance maintained between the audience and a speaker.

2. Social space - ranges from 4 to 10 feet and is used for communication among business associates , as well as to separate strangers using public areas such as beaches and bus stops.

3. Personal space - ranges from 2 to 4 feet and is used among friends and family members, and to separate people waiting in lines at teller machines.

4. Intimate space ranges out to one foot and involves a high probability of touching. We reserve it for whispering and embracing.

Examples:
In Saudi Arabia, you might find yourself almost nose to nose with a business associate because their social space equates to our intimate space. 2. In Netherlands, if you were visiting a friend, you would find the roles reversed, you would be doing the chasing because their personal space equates to our social space.

3. In the use of public transportation, Americans tend to pull in their elbows and knees and try not to touch or even look at one another while riding the bus or train. In Japan and in the Philippines, passengers are literally pushed into the cars until not even one more person will fit. You cannot help but pressed against someone elses sweaty body.
