Demonstrating outstanding overall color copy productivity and very good overall image quality and ease
of use, the Ricoh Afcio 3235C proved to be a strong overall performer in BLI's comprehensive two-
month laboratory evaluation. Confgured to handle the typical range of offce tasks by offering standard
copy, print and scan functionality, as well as optional faxing capability, the unit features competitive
rated speeds of 28 ppm for color and 35 ppm for black. The unit demonstrated very good reliability, and
earned very good overall reviews for the network connectivity aspects of its performance, including its
administrative utilities, ease of network setup and feedback to workstations. Its print drivers also received
high marks. The unit's strong overall performance in the tests is complemented by its competitive pricing
and competitive supplies costs.
BLI recommends this very good overall performer as a solid choice for offces in need of a color MFP
for monthly volumes of up to 45,000 impressions.

+ Impressively, the test unit logged 50,000 impressions in its durability test with-
out a single misfeed occurring.
+ The Afcio 3235C proved to be a highly reliable unit. Although a service call
was required during testing, it occurred near the end of the test and was simply
to replace the color and black developing units due to faded color.
A maximum of only two copy jobs can reside on the device (one running and
one reserve); up to two copy jobs can be reserved while printing.
Programming a job while one is running requires more user intervention than
is typical, as users must press the Next Job key on the display, which can be
easily overlooked.
+ An administrator can establish a priority mode, which can be either the print
function, copy function, the function that corresponds to the function currently
on the control panel display or Interleave (in which case the system alter-
nates between producing one set of a print job and one set of a copy job). When
copy is the priority, a print job pauses to output a copy job and then resumes.
When print mode is established as the priority, a copy job running will pause
to allow output of a print job.
+ To pause a job in progress in order to perform an immediate copy job, the user
selects the Interrupt hard key on the control panel and is able to access most
features required for a typical copy job, such as the RADF, multiple sets, du-
plexing and fnishing. Further, an interrupt job can be programmed while the
machine is running, which BLI technicians consider a plus. In addition, the
unit automatically returns to non-interrupted mode. This would be benefcial
in a networked environment where many jobs would likely be waiting in the
queue. Some other units do not automatically return to non-interrupted mode;
others return to non-interrupted mode but do not restart the interrupted job
until the Start key is pressed. The default time for the unit to return to non-in-
terrupted mode is user-programmable.

SmartDeviceMonitor enables confguration and monitoring of the Afcio
3235C and any other Ricoh device on the network from a client PC. The ver-
sion for administrators also monitors non-Ricoh devices on the network, but
provides more detailed information on the Ricoh products.
+ SmartDeviceMonitor provides real-time status reports on the unit, including
busy/idle, paper and toner levels and the current setup.
+ SmartDeviceMonitor provides electronic meters tracking the total number of
copies, prints and scans printed.
Web Image Monitor, the unit's embedded Web page, enables administrators to
monitor and manage the unit via a Web browser.
+ Web Image Monitor allows users to view and manage fles on the systems
Document Server, plus manage user data in the devices address book (e-mail
addresses and scan to folder locations).
+ The Web utility has a Printer Job History page that allows users to view print
jobs that have been processed, as well as the jobs that are in queue.

+ Ricoh makes plug-ins for HP's Web Jetadmin available for its product line, so
administrators who already use this popular utility to manage their HP printers
on the network can use it to manage their Ricoh products as well.
Although DeskTopBinder allows for direct printing of fles (without having to
open the application they were created in), the capability is diffcult to set up
and install.
+ The CDs are menu driven, and installing utilities and drivers is very easy.
+ The CD-ROM (Quick Install) installs the RPCS and PCL 5c print drivers,
as well as SmartDeviceMonitor for the client, automatically. The install util-
ity also automatically locates the device and creates the port. Installing the
PCL 5c and RPCS drivers, as well as SmartDeviceMonitor required just seven
clicks of the mouse.
The PCL 6 and optional Adobe PostScript 3 print drivers, as well as SmartDe-
viceMonitor for administrators, require a separate installation. However, the
port created when the RPCS and PCL 5c print drivers are installed can also be
used for the Adobe PostScript 3 print driver and PCL6 print driver.
+ The PCL 5c/6 and RPCS print drivers can automatically detect confgured ac-
cessories, eliminating the need for an administrator to manually specify any
confgured options. However, users must click update in order to initiate the
search for confgured accessories with the PCL 5c/6 print drivers.
The Adobe PostScript 3 print driver does not automatically detect confgured ac-
cessories, requiring administrators to manually specify confgured accessories.
Network settings can be confgured from both the control panel and Web util-
ity, although note that from the Web utility there is no ping capability to ensure
IP addresses have been set up properly.
+ Users receive pop-up messages regarding device status and error conditions,
as well as print job completion.
+ Color changes to the icon for SmartDeviceMonitor on the taskbar alert users to
changes in status; users can open the utility to obtain specifc information.
Users cannot view printer status, paper gauge or toner gauge from any of the
print drivers.

+ Consumables status in increments of approximately 25 percent, including a
paper gauge and toner gauge, can be viewed from the Web utility. SmartDe-
viceMonitor also offers a paper gauge in increments of approximately 25 per-
cent.
The unit does not generate an error when sending to an e-mail address that
does not exist.
The standard confguration of the Afcio 3235C includes a print controller that
features a 600-MHz processor, and shares the 1 GB of RAM and dual 40-GB
hard drives that are standard with the copier. The print controller supports PCL
5c/6 and RPCS print drivers, as well as an optional Adobe PostScript 3 print
driver.
Layout of the print drivers is dissimilar, which makes use less convenient for
those who frequently switch among them.
The drivers offer a good feature set that includes such noteworthy features as
smoothing, toner-save mode and the ability to produce originals of mixed ori-
entation (mixed portrait and landscape pages) in a single job. In addition, the

print drivers all support secure print and proof print. However, scheduled print
is not available.
+ Most of the features required for a typical print job are available from the main
tab of the PCL 5c/6 print driver, including quantity, collate sets and fnishing. In
addition, the RPCS print driver enables users to save the settings for frequently
used or complex jobs as icons on the main screen, thus allowing selections for
multiple features such as duplex, staple and booklet with just one click.
+ The PCL 5c/6 print drivers main screen is graphical; users can opt for using either
pull-down menus or icons that take users through each available setting when
clicked on in order to select the settings for Job Type, Orientation and Layout.
As is typical of a true Adobe print driver, the PostScript 3 print driver is text-
based, and most of the features required for a typical print job are not avail-
able on the main tab, including paper source, paper type, quantity, collate and
fnishing. However, the Advanced key in the Adobe PostScript 3 print driver
displays a review/check of all the current job settings in one window when
selected, and users can also change current job settings from this window.
+ The print drivers eliminate the confusion for users determining whether to use
the collate function of the print driver or the application in use, as it can be set
to default to one or the other.
+ The PCL 5c/6 and RPCS print drivers offer users a point-and-click interface
for selecting paper source and output destination. However, the Adobe Post-
Script 3 print driver does not.
PCL 5c/6 print driver users can add front or back covers to their printed docu-
ments and draw paper from up to fve paper sources per job. RPCS print driver
users can also print on front or back covers, and users can draw paper from
up to two paper sources per job. However, the Adobe PostScript 3 print driver
allows users to draw paper from only one paper source for a single job.
Users can print booklets from the PCL 5c/6 and RPCS print drivers. However,
booklet printing is not supported by the Adobe PostScript 3 print driver.
When collate is selected via the application in the Adobe PostScript 3 print
driver, although the fle size remains the same, the number of pages displayed
is inaccurate. For example, when programming three sets of a 10-page docu-
ment, the device sets the job as 30 pages, thus slowing down the processing
time.
None of the drivers offers consumable feedback, such as a paper gauge or
toner gauge.

+ No problems were experienced with any of the applications used in the appli-
cations compatibility test. Units are tested for compatibility on Windows 2000
platforms with Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, Microsoft
Excel 2000, Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Adobe PhotoShop 6.0 and Adobe Acro-
bat 6.0 using 25 application test fles, which contain text, graphics, halftone
images, tables, etc., enabling BLI technicians to evaluate memory usage, fle
processing, font rendering and grayscale capability.
+ In its standard confguration, the Afcio 3235C offers scan to e-mail, network
folders via FTP or SMB, the Document Server (the unit's hard drive) and desk-
top management applications such as DeskTopBinder.
+ Via Ricohs Document Server (dual 40-GB hard drives), copied, printed or
faxed documents can be automatically stored on the units dual 40-GB hard
drives. Further, users have the ability to store documents on the hard drive with
a PIN, ensuring fle integrity.
+ DeskTopBinder, which comes bundled with the CD-ROM containing the
scan driver, enables users to view, download and repurpose documents stored
on the hard drive. Further, fles stored in the Document Server can be sent via
e-mail.
+ Up to fve LDAP servers can be enabled. In addition to e-mail address search,
the units LDAP technology allows users to search for name, fax number, e-
mail company name and department name as long as this information exists at
the mail server.
+ In addition to directly selecting addresses from LDAP servers, addresses can
be programmed via the Web utility, software utility or at the control panel. The
control panel features a QWERTY keypad for programming destinations.
+ Users can set up a scan to e-mail favorites list.
Although the unit does not generate an error when sending to an e-mail address
that does not exist, a second job can be sent to an existing address even though
the frst job is held.
+ Also available is GlobalScan, an optional enterprise scan solution, which en-
ables users to scan documents to a range of document management and other
applications, e-mail addresses and network folders, and was rated highly by

BLI in a recent solutions report. Users can save documents in various formats
including PDF, RTF, TIFF and Excel.
+ The Afcio 3235C earned an "Excellent" image quality rating for both color
business graphics and color photographic images in print mode, and a "Very
Good" image quality rating for both types of color output in copy mode.
+ Although there was some color shifting over time in print mode, with greens
shifting toward yellow, overall quality was consistent from beginning to end
in color print mode.
+ Flesh tones improved over time in both color and shading in print mode.
+ Production of fne details also improved over time in color print mode.
+ Images in copy mode are good, with good saturation, fll and clarity, as well as
smooth transitions between levels.
The background on one of the test originals was not reproduced in copy
mode.
+ The black output produced by the Afcio 3235C was very good overall.
+ In print mode, text, line art and solids were rated "Very Good." In copy mode,
text and line art were rated "Excellent," and solids were rated "Very Good."
+ Text, line art and solids are dark and consistent in both print and copy modes.
+ The smoothness of halftone output is very good in both print and copy modes,
with only slight graininess noted in the copy output.
Although there was good separation between halftone levels at the light end to
the midrange of grayscale in print mode, there was very little separation at the
dark end. And in copy mode, the lightest level was not reproduced on the copy
and there was little or no transition between levels in the midrange.
The units print productivity in both simplex and duplex auto-detect mode is
competitive.

The Afcio 3235Cs productivity for producing booklets in print mode from
the PCL 6 print driver is competitive.
Although the unit's effciency is slightly below average when printing a 10-
page PowerPoint fle in full-color mode, its actual average running speed is
competitive.
Although the unit's job stream effciency when printing BLI's job stream in
auto-detect mode is among the lowest for the group, its actual running speed
when printing the job stream is competitive.
+ The Afcio 3235C's frst-copy times in auto-color mode from both the platen
and document feeder are among the fastest for tested business color models.
+ The Afcio 3235Cs actual running speeds and overall copy effciency in 1:2
and 2:2 auto-color mode are among the fastest for tested business color mod-
els, while they are competitive for the group in 1:1 auto-color mode.
The Afcio 3235Cs productivity for producing booklets in copy mode is com-
petitive.
Although the units overall effciency for producing one and fve sets of a 10-
page document in black print mode is below average, its actual running speeds
are generally competitive.
The unit's productivity for producing booklets in print mode from the PCL 6
print driver is competitive.
The units productivity when printing BLIs job stream in black mode is well
below average.
+ The unit's rated document feeder speed is good, at 45 originals per minute.
The Afcio 3235Cs frst-copy times in black mode from both the platen and
document feeder are competitive with those of other tested business color
models.
+ The units copy effciency is the highest for business color models tested to
date in 2:2 black mode, and among the highest in 1:1 and 1:2 black mode. In
addition, actual running speed for producing one, fve and 10 sets of a 10-page
document in black mode is competitive.

The Afcio 3235Cs control panel, which is typical of Ricoh products, incorpo-
rates an 8-7/16" x 3-5/16" touch-screen display. The contrast of the Afcio 3235Cs
control panel can be adjusted from the dial on the left side of the control panel.
However, the angle of the control panel cannot be tilted. Although there is no Help
key, the unit does have a job review for copy jobs and proof copy keys.
Separate hard keys for Copy, Document Server, Facsimile, Printer and Scan-
ner are also located on the control panels left side, and each is equipped with
built-in LEDs that illuminate to indicate which function is operational. In ad-
dition, separate hard keys for Auto Color Selection, Full Color, B&W, Single
Color and Two-Color enable users to easily toggle between the different copy
modes available.
The User Tools/Counter hard key allows users to customize the unit to their
desired settings. Users can customize settings for the copier, printer, scanner,
fax and Document Server; change the copy count display to count up or down;
and change the function priority.
+ Most of the features required for a typical copy job (quantity, duplex, paper
selection, exposure and sort) are available on the frst screen.
There is no selection for 1:1 copying, which might be confusing if a user needs
to make a single-sided copy after completing a double-sided copy job.
+ Programming job build functionality is easy via Batch mode.

There is no job list key on the control panel for copy, print or scan jobs. As a
result, copy jobs offer no status other than sets completed, total originals and
total sets desired of the current running copy job. In addition, users are only
provided with the partial application name of the current print job and jobs
in queue are not listed. Further, very limited information is available for scan
jobs. In addition, jobs cannot be modifed or moved. It is also too easy for a
user to cancel one or all print jobs at the device.
+ Although there is no mechanical counter, two electronic meter counters are
available from the control panel. With the basic counter, color copies and prints
as well as black copies and prints with their totals are displayed. The more de-
tailed counter is accessed from the Administrator Tools touch key within Sys-
tem Settings under the User Tools/Counter hard key. Users select Display/Print
Counter to view fax and staple counters in addition to black and color copies
and prints. Both counters can also be printed.
+ Users can pull open the drawers without having to press any buttons when load-
ing paper. Further, the length and width guides in the user-adjustable drawers
slide to ft the size of the paper being loaded.
A locking mechanism in the back of these drawers must be unlocked and re-
locked when adjusting the paper size.
+ The user-adjustable drawers are equipped with electronic paper sensors; there-

The bypass tray recognizes that paper has been loaded in it, but does not rec-
ognize the paper size. Some other units BLI has tested also do not detect the
paper size loaded in the bypass, but automatically display a menu prompting
the user to select the correct paper size.
+ Two dynamic graphics appear on the touch-screen display when a misfeed
occurs. One graphic shows the location of the misfed paper with indicators,
and as misfeeds are removed the indicators clear. The other graphic does not
provide text-based information, but does illustrate clearly to users the misfeed
removal process.
Removing misfeeds in the fusing unit can be cumbersome, as there is no
access cover for the fusing unit. To remove a misfeed, users may have to
turn a knob and use a handle to lift the fusing unit from the machine to clear
misfed sheets.
+ Toner replacement is simple and clean. The toner cartridges are located under a
cover on the non-fnisher side of the unit, and each color is housed separately.
Users simply push a green lever to release each cartridge. The Afcio 3235C
does not require a fusing oil reservoir for the units fusing rollers, which is an
improvement over its predecessor.

+ The unit offers 1 GB of memory and dual 40-GB hard drives, which is above
average for business color models available.
The units standard paper capacity of 1,000 sheets and maximum paper capac-
ity of 3,100 sheets are competitive, although most business color models can
be confgured with higher paper capacities.
The Afcio 3235Cs bypass tray capacity (100 sheets) and RADF capacity (80
sheets) are competitive for units in this group. In addition, the bypass tray
handles paper weights up to 90-lb. index and accommodates paper sizes up to
12" x 18".
The unit can handle paper weights only up to 28-lb. bond from its paper drawers.
The frst standard drawer holds only letter-size paper. The second standard
drawer holds paper sizes up to 11" x 17".
Paper options include a large-capacity tray (LCT) that handles up to 2,000
sheets of letter-size paper. Two paper units are also available, each handling
paper sizes up to 11" x 17". The frst paper unit accommodates up to 550 sheets,
whereas the second paper unit offers two trays and accommodates up to 1,100
sheets.

The unit offers both cover insertion and sheet insertion.
The optional Embedded Software Architecture is a Java SDK-based feature

Finishing options available for the Afcio 3235C include the multi-tray fnish-
er and the booklet fnisher. The multi-tray fnisher offers two standard output
trays, a maximum stacking capacity of 2,000 sheets and multi-position sta-
pling. The booklet fnisher offers one standard output tray, a maximum stack-
ing capacity of 1,000 sheets and multi-position stapling. Users can purchase
the punch option to perform two- or three-hole punching for both fnishing
options. In addition to multi-position stapling and hole punching, the booklet
fnisher provides saddle-stitching of up to 10 sheets to create 40-page book-
lets. Further, users can also purchase the multi-bin accessory, which offers two
trays with a maximum stacking capacity of 350 sheets.

most secure, as users names and passwords are authenticated against Windows
directory service, Active Directory (AD). LDAP authentication authenticates
users against an LDAP server in a Windows or Novell networking environment
and enables them to send scanned documents from their personal e-mail ac-
counts to other users directly from the device. User code authentication limits
access to functions according to the user code. Basic authentication not only
manages the machines available functions, but also limits access to stored fles
and to personal data in the address book. SMTP authentication and POP before
SMTP are also available.

Test Environment
This product has been tested in BLIs 10,000-square-foot test lab, in an envi-
ronment monitored by a Honeywell Temp/RH chart recorder, which replicates
typical offce conditions.
Test Equipment
BLIs dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2000 and Microsoft
Exchange 2000 servers, Windows 2000 and XP workstations, 10BaseT/
100BaseTX network switches and CAT5 cabling.
Test Duration
Products are tested for two months, one month of which consists of a durability
test during which the product is run at its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly
volume, with daily volumes evenly divided over the course of the test.
Tested Confguration
Base unit, plus the optional booklet fnisher, 2-/3-hole punch, Adobe Post-
Script 3 print driver and PS590 paper bank.
Test Procedures
The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include
BLIs proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures, including
a BLI-developed variation of ASTMs 1318-90 Test Method for Determination
of Productivity Using Electrostatic Copy Machines. In addition to a number of
proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry-standard Katun test original
for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to evaluate
applications compatibility. In addition to a visual observation, color print quality
is tested using the ANSI standard IT8 Color Test Target, which is read using
the Minolta CM503I Spectrophotometer, and samples are analyzed using the
CIE XY Chromaticity Diagram. Density of black and color output is measured
using an X-Rite 428 Densitometer. Georgia-Pacifc Spectrum DP 20-lb. bond
(92 brightness) is used in the tests. For color models, Georgia-Pacifc Microprint
Multi-System 24-lb. (88 bright) is used for the image quality evaluation.

The unit completed the job stream in 2 minutes
and 54.03 seconds, running at 6.6 ppm, which
translates to an effciency rate of 23.4%.
Black mode
The unit completed the job stream in 2 minutes
and 15.56 seconds, running at 8.4 ppm, which
translates to an effciency rate of 24.0%.
BLIs job stream includes Word documents, Outlook e-mail
messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acro-
bat PDF les, totaling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of
trafc a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-
user environment. All of the les are sent to the printer as a
group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when
the last page of the last le exits the device. Job stream ef-
ciency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at
which the unit operates when producing real-world jobs. The
closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more
efcient the unit.

* The PCL 5c print driver requires the user to click an icon, which is another step for the hardware to be located, whereas the
RPCS print driver locates the conguration automatically.
** Although there is a selection for collate in the Adobe PostScript 3 print driver, it does not properly function. Also note that when
printing from the RPCS print driver, users can customize the driver so that collate is always on. In addition, users can select
collate from within the print driver itself, although it is difcult to locate. The PCL5c/6 print drivers eliminate any confusion for
users determining whether to use the collate function of the print driver or the application in use, as it can be set to default to
