Sri Subramanya College of Engg & Tech - Palani Department of Mechanical Engineering Internal Test - I Part - A

The document contains questions from an internal test in Finite Element Analysis. 1. It asks about the 'h' and 'p' versions of the Finite Element Method and to name some weighted residual techniques. It also asks about post processing and some common FEA software. 2. The second part asks to derive the shape function and stiffness matrix for a 1D bar element. It also gives a differential equation and asks to find an approximate solution using Galerkin's method. 3. The third question gives a problem about a simply supported beam and asks to calculate bending moment and deflection at the mid span using Rayleigh-Ritz method and compare to exact solution. It also asks to explain various weighted

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What are 'h' and 'p' versions of Finite Element method? Name the weighted residuals techniques. What is meant by post processing? Name any 4 FEA software? What is Rayleigh-Ritz method?

Part B 1. Derive the shape function for 1D Bar element. Or Derive the stiffness matrix for 1D Bar element. 2. (a) The following differential equation is available for a physical phenomenon:

(8) (8)

D2y/dx2 -10x =5; the boundary conditions are: y (O) =0 and y (l) =O. By using Galerkin's method of weighted residuals, find an approximate solution of the above differential equation. (16) Or (b) The following differential equation is available f or a physical phenomenon. d'y/dx' +50=0. O:SX:S10 Trial function is y =alx (10- x),y (0) =0, y(l) = 0. Find the value of a1usingall the weighted residual techniques and compare the solutions. (16) 3. (a) A simply supported beam subjected to uniformly distributed load 'qo' over entire span and also point load of magnitude 'P' at the centre of the span. Calculate the bending moment and deflection at mid span by using Rayleiy-Ritz method and compare with the exact solution. 16) Or (b) Explain the various weighted residual techniques. (16)
