a Bang_ Grade Level _3__ Title _Technology in a Bag______ CONTEXTUAL FACTORS (classroom factors)
Contextual Factors: 23 Students: 12 Boys, 11 Girls 21 Caucasian, 2 Hispanic 5 students with IEP's: Dylan-ADHD, Behavior Jayden-Academics Logan- Severely disabled: mentally and medically. Has aide at all times-comes in couple minutes daily-will not be at lesson. Kaylee-academically Terry-academic 2 Students with Speech disability: Nicholas-also gets distracted easily, immature at times No ELL learners. No identified GATE students. 2 students wear glasses (Jayden, Kiley,) Classroom environment: Students work in groups of 4 desks both independently and as partners. Whole group instruction at rug in front of room. There is a SMART board and Elmo. Each student has assess to an iPad.

WALK-AWAY (As a result of this lesson, what do I want the students to know, understand, and be able to do?)
State Standard/Objective: 3rd grade Science Standard 2: Obj. 1: Classify living and nonliving things in an environment. b. Identify characteristics of nonliving things. Siop 3 Content Walk-Away: I will be able to identify objects that are technology, what materials they are made of, and problems they solve. Siop 1 Language Walk-Away: I will be able to identify objects that are technology, the material they are made of, and what problem it solves. Siop 2 Vocabulary: Technology-Anything that people create and use to solve a problem, Engineer-A person that used their knowledge and creativity to design things that solve problems, Material-The substance from which an object is made.

TEACHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Technology doesn't always refer to electronic devises. It refers to every object, system, or process that has been designed or modified to be useful to someone or something. Dish sponges and dish soap, slippers and high heels, deck chairs and dining room chairs, are all things that have been designed for purposes from cleaning to looking nice and comfortable. Anything designed to solve a problem is technology. It doesn't always use electricity. Technology can be made of a lot of different material. Students are probably familiar with materials such as: wood, plastic, glass, and cloth, but do not realize that common objects are made of these materials. Engineers design technology. Anyone can be an engineer.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE (What evidence do I need to show the students have

learned the Walk-Away?) Formative Evidence (checking for understanding throughout the lesson): Observing answers to questions, observing pair/share discussions, Pre-test attached Content Walk-Away Evidence (Summative): I will be able to identify an object that is technology, what materials it is made of, and what problem is solves.

Modifications/Accomodations (ELL, IEP, GATE, etc.)

Nicholas-Handle problems as they arise. Walk by him during each activity plan to ensure he is on task. Dylan-Handle problems as they arise. Walk by him to help him stay on task. Give him a chance to speak.

Language Walk-Away Evidence (Summative): I will be able to name an object that is technology, identify the materials it is made of, and which problem it solves.

ACTIVE LEARNING PLAN

Activate/Building Background Knowledge Who has seen our Red Mountain school shirt?Siop 7,18 (I will bring and show them the shirt) It has the letters STEAM on it. Does anyone know what they mean? Siop7,18 ( Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics). Today we are going to learn about two of these words: engineering and technology. You took a pretest this morning on objects that are technology. What do you think technology is? Siop 18. Does technology have to be a computer or iPad? Does it have to be an electronic? Siop7, 16,18 Technology is almost anything created to solve a problem or meet a need. Siop 9. I will show the slide with the word technology on the SMART board and read the definition. Can you repeat the word after me? Great! Siop 29 Some examples of technology are: pencils, cups, cell phones, backpacks. Were you surprised to know that these things are technology? I was. Who can tell me what an engineer is? I will show the slide Engineer, let's say the word Engineer. An engineer An engineer is someone who uses their knowledge and creativity to design objects, systems, or processes to solve a problem. Siop 4,9 Our last vocabulary word is Material. I will place the word Material on the board. Siop 4,9 Who thinks they know what a material means? Great thinking! Siop 29 Material is what something is made of. I will hold up a pencil. Siop 4,18 What material is this pencil made of? (wood). How about this cell phone? I will hold up my cell phone. Siop 4,9,16 6(metal) Great! Siop 29 Our two goals in today's lesson are: (I will show slide of objectives and read them out loud). Siop 4 "I will be able to identify an object that is technology, what materials it is made of, and what problem is solves." Siop 1 This is what you get to do in the lesson: "I will be able to name an object that is technology, identify the materials it is made of, and which problem it solves." Can you please repeat it after me? Good job! Siop 29 Students will repeat objective. Formative assessment: Learning Goal Students will understand what technology & engineering are. Success Criteria Students will answer questions of what technology & engineering is and materials it is made of. Assessment Strategy What is technology? Is it always electric? What is an engineer?

Modification/accommodations: (ELL, IEP, GATE, etc.) Keep an eye on Nick and Dylan to make sure they are on task and participating. Make sure Jayden, Terry, and Kaylee have a chance to participate. Siop 5

Focus Lesson (I do it) Now we are going to talk about engineers. Does anyone know someone who is an engineer? Siop 8, 9,18 What work does that person do? I want to talk about an engineer I know. This is my oldest brother, George. I will show slide of my brother. Siop 4 George is a civil engineer. A civil engineer deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of our physical and naturally built environment, such as: roads, bridges, dams, and buildings. I will show slide of civil engineer definition. Siop 4,6,9 Have any of you been to see a play at the Tuacahn? Siop 7,16 I will show a picture of Tuacahn. Siop 4 I went to see Mary Poppins at the Tuacahn this summer. Did any of you? Siop7 My brother helped design Tuacahn. What need do you think Tuacahn filled? Siop 18 (place for people to watch plays, school, parking lot to park their cars). How many of you have been to Sand Hollow Reservoir to swim? Siop 7 I will show a slide of Sand Hollow reservoir. Siop 4 My brother also helped design the reservoir. What problem does a reservoir solve? Siop 18 (holds water so it doesn't flood, keeps water for us to use when we need it). One more thing he helped design was the storm drain for our city of Ivins. Siop 7 Does anyone know what a storm drain is? I will show a slide of a storm drain. Siop 4 A storm drain is where all the extra water goes when it rains, so that our city doesn't flood. These are some other types of engineers: I will show 4 slides of pictures of different engineers and what they create. Siop 4,6,9,17,30 Formative Assessment: Learning Goal Students will understand specific things engineers create do to solve problems.

Success Criteria Students will answer questions on solutions solved by engineers.

Assessment Strategy I will be observing answers: What engineers solve.

Modification/accommodations: Keep an eye on Nick and Dylan to make sure they are on task and participating. Make sure Jayden, Terry, and Kaylee have a chance to participate. Siop 5

Guided Instruction (We do it) Now we are going to talk about technologies. My house is full of technologies and I brought some to share with you today. I will show a bag of contains examples of technologies (shoe, fork, hair spray, glue) Siop 4. I will have a student come and pull out each object and I will ask: "Are you surprised that this is technology? Why or why not? What material is the technology made of? Siop 6,16,17,18,29, 30 Formative Assessment: Learning Goal Students will understand what technology is and material it is made from. Success Criteria Students will identify technologies in bag and materials they are made of. Assessment Strategy What material is this technology made of?

Modification/accommodations: Keep an eye on Nick and Dylan to make sure they are on task and participating. Make sure Jayden, Terry, and Kaylee have a chance to participate. Siop 5

Collaborative/Cooperative (You do it together) Now we get to work in groups. I brought a mystery bag for each group . Siop 4 Open your bag and pass around the technology and look at it closely. I want you to think: what problem it solves and what material it is made of. I will show slide of instructions for activity. Siop 4 Students will pass around technology and discuss in groups the two questions. Siop 6, 16,17,18,30 Formative Assessment: Learning Goal Students will understand what technology is and material it is made from.

Success Criteria Students will identify technologies in bag and materials they are made of.

Assessment Strategy What is the technology? What is it made of.

Modification/accommodations: Keep an eye on Nick and Dylan to make sure they are on task and participating. Make sure Jayden, Terry, and Kaylee have a chance to participate. Siop 5

Independent (You do it alone) I have a special technology worksheet you get to write about your technology. Siop 4,6. I will show slide of worksheet: "Technology Around Us". This is how you will do the worksheet. I will walk through each question on the worksheet. (See attached). Class will have 10 minutes to finish worksheet. Siop 18 Would someone like to share with the class what technology their group had and what they wrote about it? I will ask 1-3 students to come up and show their technology, telling the class what problem it solves and what it is made of. Siop 6, 16, 17,18,29 Summative Assessment: Students will complete worksheet: Technology Around Us. See attached rubric. Siop 30 Modification/accommodations: Make sure Jayden, Terry, and Kaylee have a chance to participate. Siop5 Closure/Review of walk-aways, vocabulary, and essential questions Let's talk about our lesson. Did we meet our goals today? "I will be able to identify an object that is technology, what materials it is made of, and what problem is solves." Siop 28 "I will be able to name an object that is technology, identify the materials it is made of, and which problem it solves." Siop 28 I will show slide of lesson objectives and review them . Siop 4 What are the words we learned? What is an engineer? What is technology? What does material mean? Siop 16, 29 I will review vocabulary words. Siop 16,18,27 Even though we might not have realized it before, almost everything we wear, use, or work with is engineered. Somebody had to think of how to design that object to solve a particular problem. So, when you go home tonight look around your house and see how many objects you can find that are technology. It was so fun to teach you today. You did a great job. (Note: Closure includes student interactions, reflection, and/or demonstrations.)

Science Engineering Lesson Reflection

I felt that this lesson went very well. I was excited to teach about engineering because our school is a STEAM school and is just beginning to teach engineering. I found that the students knew very little about it, or what technology really was. They were very interested and engaged throughout the whole lesson. They especially loved the slide show I created on the different projects my brother, who is a civil engineer, had done here in the St. George area, such as Tuacahn, Sand Hollow Reservoir, and the Ivins City storm drains. I felt that the pre, post, and formative assessments went well and were perfect for this lesson. The small group activity also worked well and the students enjoyed it. Next time, I will work on making sure Nick does not lean on people to answer questions when he really needs to try harder with prompts that I can give him. I would also like to make sure Jayden is better engaged and not 'lost' in the back of the class. I need to work more with the vocabulary, using it more in the lesson and giving the students as chance to speak it. Overall I felt that this lesson went really well and was fun for the students, I even had some come and thank me for teaching it afterwards!
