As you may have heard, the children have had a goal of being kind by raising hand, not interrupting, helping others without being asked, helping others when asked, working /uietly so that all can learn. 'his time of the year these things can be hard as children have more of a need to move around with winter keeping them inside more often. 1ut, they did it. .hey +et their goal an" ne2t Fri"ay, February 21st, we will have a #a3a+a "ay to &elebrate. 2lease send your child in warm pa"amas. !ea"ers Worksho#$ %on-Fi&tion '(enguins)

'his week we continued to take a close look at non(fiction te&t features. We learned that we can use the table o, &ontents to find what we would like to learn more about and that we do not need to read a non( fiction book from beginning to end. We learned that non(fiction books have a glossary at the end that gives definitions of newly encountered theme related words in the te&t. We learned how in,or+ation is organi-e" in non(fiction books and even applied this learning to our own non(fiction books about penguins.

Writers Worksho#$ 4ll about (enguins

'ogether, we have taken notes on our new learning3s and organi4ed them onto sticky notes. 1efore we begin writing each day, we decided what we want to write about +how penguins stay warm, and pull out all the sticky notes that relate to this topic. While we are doing this research pro"ect together, the children are doing their own writing independently. %n first grade, they will be doing their own reading, note taking, and writing. 5e&t week we will share our books with a few different classes and % will send them home for you. % really wanted to save them for conferences and their growth folders but the kids are way too e&cited.

'his week while learning about penguins, the children learned how penguins stay warm in their habitat. 2enguins have a layer of blubber under their skin and two different kinds of feathersE pokey waterproof feathers on the outer layer and thick warm down underneath. We e&perimented by putting one hand into ice cold water and the other hand into the blubber glove, then in the ice water. 'hey were surprised how warm it was. Fsing petroleum "elly, % modeled how the oils on the penguin3s feathers keep them waterproof.
