Water Harvesting Structures

Water harvesting structures (WHS) are important for rain-fed farmland in Pakistan outside canal irrigation areas. WHS collect and store rainfall and runoff to irrigate crops, but 2010-2011 floods damaged many in Balochistan. WHS rehabilitation will repair ponds, structures, and terraces to control runoff, store water, and efficiently meet crop needs. This will control erosion, boost production, and be implemented like land preparation projects.

Water harvesting structures (WHS) Significant part of cultivated area in Pakistan is rain-fed which falls outside the command

area of canal system, locally known as barani areas. In these barani areas, farmers rely on rainfall, ground water, and hill runoff to irrigate their lands. Water harvesting techniques are used to enhance the quality and reliability of water for crop production. The floods of 2010 and 2011 have badly damaged these structures in Balochistan province. WHS rehabilitation works will include the repair of storage ponds, drop structure, check structures, retaining walls and rehabilitation of terraces in order to minimize the deficit in crop water demand and to optimize water use efficiency. The runoff water will be controlled, stored in small ponds and utilized for productive agricultural use. With these interventions, soil erosion and runoff will be controlled and eventually, agricultural production will be enhanced. Implementation modalities similar to land preparation are applicable to WHS schemes.
