Roaming allows wireless devices like cell phones to stay connected to a network without interruption when traveling outside their home network coverage area. It works by automatically connecting to another "visited" network when outside the range of the home network, using the subscriber's identity. Roaming is enabled by mobility management and authentication, authorization, and accounting billing procedures between networks.

Roaming helps ensure that a traveling wireless device (typically a cell phone) i s kept connected to a network without breaking

the connection. In wireless telec ommunications, Traditional Roaming is a general term referring to the ability fo r a cellular customer to automatically make and receive voice calls, send and re ceive data, or access other services, including home data services, when travell ing outside the geographical coverage area of the home network, by means of usin g a visited network. For example; should you travel beyond of your cell phone co mpany's transmitter range, your cell phone would automatically hop onto another phone company's service, if available. Using another phone company's service can be done by using the subscriber identi ty in the visited network. Roaming is technically supported by mobility manageme nt, authentication, authorization and accounting billing procedures (known as AA A or 'triple A').
