According to both Hatha Yoga and Ayurveda there are three humours called Tridoa in our body: Vta (wind), Pitta (bile)
and Kapha (mucus). An imbalance in the Doa will result in illness. Kriys are used before Pryma and other higher
Yoga practices in order to purify the body of toxins and to ensure safe and successful progression along the path of total
positive health. In Hatha Yoga there are six particular practices which were specifically designed for this purpose. They are
called akarma. a is six, Karma is action.
-
Dhauti, Basti, Neti, Traka, Naul, and Kaplabhti; these are known as akarma or the six cleansing processes.
Dhauti clean the entire alimentary canal from the mouth to the anus.
Basti is for washing and toning the large intestine.
Neti is a process of cleansing and purifying the nasal passages.
Tr aka is the practice of intense gazing at one point or object which develops the power of concentration.
Naul is a method of massaging and strengthening the abdominal organs.
Kaplabhti is a breathing technique for purifying the frontal region of the brain.
Although there are six Kriys, each one consists of a variety of practices. Kriys regulate the production of the Doa. They
are all just non-medicinal ways of maintaining the body and overcoming illness. The ancient Yogic methods are really the
most natural ways to help the bodily systems heal themselves. We do service our cars by washing and polishing the
outside to keep the paintwork in good condition so that the bodywork does not rust and so that they look good. We do
wipe down the kitchen benches daily and clean out the cupboards when they get a buildup of dirt inside. Whats the
difference with our bodies? We do wash the outside of our bodies regularly for both hygiene and appearance, well why
not the inside? Just like servicing the cars air filter, we should clean our nose filters. Just as decarbonising the engine helps
it to work more efficiently, we should keep our digestive system in peak condition so that it helps the fuel (food) burn
better and the wastes to be eliminated better. Even more important than our cars and our kitchens, are the vehicles we
spend our whole day in that is our human bodies.
These Kriys are very powerful practices that can never be learned from books or taught by inexperienced people.
According to the tradition, only those instructed by a Guru may teach others. It is essential to be personally instructed as to
how and when to perform the Kriya, according to individual limitations and needs. Therefore it is recommended that the
people suffering from any medical condition, who wish to utilize any of these practices to promote total positive health,
should seek the advice of a competent teacher.
Psychic Physiology of Kriy: Kriy specifically increase the vital capacity of the practitioner. They were never designed
for therapy alone, but to create harmony between the two major subtle energy flows, Pingala N (when the right nostril
has a greater flow of air, physical energy is dominant) and Ida N (when the left nostril has a greater flow of air, mental
energy is dominant), thereby attaining purification and balance of body and mind and to prepare one for further practices.
As they bring about smooth and perfect functioning of the bodily systems, it is inevitable that through their practice the
mind will become free from turbulence and disturbances and thus be better able to concentrate and to move towards
Meditation. When Ida (Surya or sun N) and Pingala (Chandra or moon N) are purified and balanced through Kriy
which is the main aim of Hatha Yoga, then Suumn, the third most important N, begin to flow. When Suumn, the
spiritual channel flows, Kundalini, the source of all energy in humankind and the universe, awakens and rises through the
Chakras to unite with pure consciousness, iva. Having attained this, the Yoga practitioner gains ultimate knowledge,
supreme power, total freedom and infinite bliss.
