Assignment 1 (ECE3153)

This document contains instructions for Thermodynamics Assignment 1. It includes 3 questions about refrigerants, water vapor in a piston-cylinder device, and estimating the initial pressure in a tank based on vapor condensing. Students are asked to determine properties like pressure, energy, volume, temperature, mass, and depict the piston process on a P-V diagram. The assignment is worth 30 total marks and is due on a specified date for the Thermodynamics class.

1. A 0.5 m3 vessel contains 10 kg of refrigerant-134a at -20C. Determine (a) pressure, (b) the total internal energy, and (c) the volume occupied by the liquid phase. (10 marks) 2. A piston-cylinder device contains 0.1 m 3 of liquid water and 0.9 m3 of water vapor in equilibrium at 800 kPa. Heat is transferred at constant pressure until the temperature reaches 350C. (a) What is the initial temperature of the water? (b) Determine the total mass of the water. (c) Calculate the final volume. (d) Show the process on a P-v diagram with respect to saturation lines. (10 marks) 3. A rigid tank contains water vapor at 300C and an unknown pressure. When the tank is cooled to 180C, the vapor starts condensing. Estimate the initial pressure in the tank. (10 marks) (Total: 30 marks)
