Rivets: - Advantages

Rivets are a cheap and lightweight fastening method but are not as strong as bolts. The minimum spacing between rivets is 3 diameters, with closer spacing used in boilers. The maximum spacing is 16 times the outside plate thickness. Rivet failure typically occurs via shear of the rivet, with the shear strength being 0.4 times the material yield strength. Tensile failure of the connected members can also occur if stresses exceed the material yield strength over the net cross-sectional area after accounting for rivet holes.

Rivets

Advantages
Cheap, especially in assembly time Don t shake loose like bolts Lightweight Easy assembly

Disadvantages
Not as strong as bolts (end must yield to form head) No disassembly

Rivets
Use as many as possible without reducing member cross section too much.
Minimum spacing = 3 diameters. Closer in boilers.

Maximum spacing = 16 times thickness of outside plate.

Failure Modes
Bending of member: Rarely important

Shear of rivet (Most important mode)

Rivet diameter = d Rivet shear strength = 0.4Sy

Failure modes

Reduction = # of rivets x diameter

Bearing (contact) stress of member:

P must be < 0.9 S y memb d tm

Group of rivets Rivets are used in groups. Offset load can shear rivets around a centroid.
