ELEC9123 Design Tasks Week 7 9 Power

This document outlines two design tasks for a power electronics course. Task 1 requires designing a circuit using a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) to short the load and protect it from overvoltage above 21V from a 20V power supply. A current limiting circuit is also needed. Task 2 requires designing a circuit inside a "black box" to provide control pulses from a computer I/O port to the gate of an SCR, causing an LED to flash at a visible frequency. The circuit must include selecting an appropriate SCR and LED. MATLAB code is also required to generate the control pulses.

ELEC9123: Design Proficiency (S1 2012

Power Electronics Design

You are required to design the following two tasks from Weeks 7 to 9.

Design Task 1:
One of the applications of a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) is to protect a load against an over voltage from a power supply. The diagram below shows a positive supply of 20V, connected to the load via a black box.

The supply voltage, 20V should appear across the load resistance under normal conditions. If the power supply voltage increases above 21V, then the load should be protected against the damaging effects of this over voltage. Design a circuit for the black box, using a silicon controlled diode to short the load terminals C & D at the first sign of over voltage. Note: When a SCR shorts the load, you need to consider a current limiting circuit to prevent the excessive current.

Design Task 2:
The following circuit shows an LED connected to 10V DC, via an SCR. The SCR should be turned on and off (ie. the control pulse) using the I/O port of the computer, such that the LED flashes at a particular frequency (of your choice) that can be seen by naked eye. The output of the black box should be connected to the gate of the silicon controlled rectifier (SCR).

Select the appropriate SCR and LED, Design the black box circuit that will provide a signal to the gate of the
SCR

Write the appropriate MATLAB code to provide control pulses to the

black box.
