In PSIII, all of that has chan g e d 3 I feel a really stron g conn e c t e d n e s s with all of my stud e n t s and this has imm e n s e l y help e d with my teac hin g and classroo m ma n a g e m e n t . I was surpris e d how much I en.oye d teac hin g *rt class. *t first, I was fright e n e d with the idea of teac hin g a sub.ect I was so unfa miliar with, but reali1e d that I /new mor e tha n I thoug h t I did. I was able to apply a lot of what I2d learn e d in an 5lem e n t a r y *rt cours e abou t the *rt curriculu m and typ e s of mat e ri als, tech niq u e s , and pro.ect s. I am prett y proud of what I put toge t h e r throu g h o u t this cours e and the rece p tio n I got from my stud e n t s . Part of what I en.oye d the mos t was seeing a new group of /ids and wor/ing with the m outsid e of a core sub.ect. This gav e me a sens e of the similarities and differe n c e s involved in inter e s t s , abilities, and classroo m ma n a g e m e n t . I was quite excite d to teac h 0igital #iti1ens hip and to be able to bring in a lot of the inform a tiv e video s and mat e ri al that I2ve collect e d from the Intern e t . I eve n got so pas sion a t e abou t it that I parodie d a silly song to shar e with the grad e ( class e s abou t Intern e t safet y. This was also an awe s o m e exp erie n c e in collabor a ti n g with oth er grad e ( teac h e r s bec a u s e we all too/ turns planning and sharing lesso n s . 6utsid e of teac hin g, I was able to start and latch onto ma n y activities as well as ma/ing an effort to att e n d stud e n t sports ga m e s and eve n t s . I hav e help e d volunt e e r s from Par/ !eadow s church run the school +rea/fa s t Progra m twice a wee/ before school. I cam e every !onda y and )edn e s d a y morning to help set up, prep a r e , and monitor the stud e n t s as they grab b e d bre a/f a s t in the cafet e ri a. I was ther e to lend a helping hand by pouring .uice, butt e rin g bre a d , washin g dishe s , ens urin g stud e n t s were signing in, and to shoo the m all out to get to class. It was gre a t to see som e of my stud e n t s outsid e of class, as well as to see and me e t oth er stud e n t s . I remind e d mys elf that I might be the first inter a c tio n they hav e had that day, or eve n the first friendly face, and it was gre a t to be ther e. )ith a pas sion for dra m a , esp e ci ally for come d y, I thoug h t it would be fun to start an improv&is a tio n' club. I ens ur e d that we did a variet y of things that everyo n e en.oye d and could particip a t e in. I hav e gott e n a lot of really good feed b a c / from stud e n t s abou t the club and how they wish it were for long er and mor e often. I thin/ this has bee n an excellen t way for stud e n t s in differe n t grad e s , and other s who wouldn2t norm ally inter a c t, to get to /now each oth er and to build their confide n c e . +eginning on Sept e m b e r :;, I help e d -udith !eunier one period a wee/ by rea din g with her 5nglish %angu a g e %earn e r stud e n t s individu ally. This allowe d her to carry on her lesson s while I wor/ed with stud e n t s oneon- one at their level. She has the begin n e r group of 5%% stud e n t s . It was am a 1in g to hear the m read and to see how muc h they hav e progr e s s e d over the ter m. I also met with -udith and 0avid uller for Profes sion al 0evelop m e n t to discus s a pros p e c tiv e 5%% progr a m at the middle school level. This progr a m has since bee n put into plac e and I thin/ it is really cool that som e of my idea s went into building it. +eginning the last wee/ of @ove m b e r , I hav e bee n also bee n helping !elissa )all2s grad e A Bnowledg e and 5mploya bility class when I hav e free periods. So far I2ve be e n ther e during %angu a g e *rts, !ath, and Scienc e. +ecau s e a lot of what they do involves differe n t levelled tas/s, I2m able to help ma/ e it aroun d to every stud e n t to help the m as they wor/. 5arlier in the ter m, I help e d sup e rvis e and direct :: stud e n t s from this class at the Soup Bitche n for thre e hours as we prep a r e d , serv e d, and clean e d up food for their clients. I tea m e d up with Tam mi ore m a n who start e d up this year2s %ead e r s hip #lub and we each too/ on half of the stud e n t s . I hav e also put in an application to the T0 riend s of the 5nviron m e n t for funding of recycling bins. Toget h e r with the %ead er s hip crew, I volunt e e r e d in the conc e s sio n for the )olverin e #lassic &volleyb all tourn a m e n t ' , the Tip- 6ff #lassic &bas/ e t b all tourn a m e n t ' and the ,allowe e n 0ance- *-Thon, for a total of :A hours. )e also ma d e decor a tio n s for the ,allowe e n 0anc e and put the m up in the gym. In conclusion, I hav e absolut ely loved my time at )ilson !iddle School. The staff hav e bee n nothing but friendly and the stud e n t s provid e me with endles s fulfillme n t and ent er t ai n m e n t . I had not anticipa t e d beco mi n g so att a c h e d to a school in the few mont h s I hav e spe n t here. Teachin g half time, I had also had not anticip a t e d filling up the oth er half of my time bec a u s e I muc h rath e r would spen d it with stud e n t s and obs ervin g other teac h e r s tha n wor/ing on my own. This ma d e for a very bus y se m e s t e r , but it was compl e t ely rew ar din g and I wouldn2t chan g e a thing. The grad e (* classroo m at )ilson has 7( stud e n t s with a wide variety of stre n g t h s and nee d s . Som e of the stud e n t s in the class pres e n t uniqu e challen g e s including beh a viour al issu e s . It has be e n import a n t for #arm e n to hav e a stron g pres e n c e in the class with clear exp e c t a ti o n s and guideline s . )hen loo/ing critically at a teac h e r s2 perfor m a n c e I find it extr e m e l y import a n t to loo/ at so much before teac hin g eve n begins. I loo/ clos ely at how that teac h e r att e m p t s to est a blis h relations hip s with the staff and beco m e part of the educ a tio n al environ m e n t in the school. #arm e n was able to ma/ e a smoo t h transition into )ilson and beco m e part of our school family. #arm e n imm e r s e d hers elf within our school family and it was wond e rful to see. !s. $iancarlo use d this sa m e appro a c h in est a blis hing open lines of com m u nic a tio n with the par e n t s 4 g u a r di a n s of her stud e n t s . #om m u nic a tio n with the hom e and with other educ a tio n al part n e r s is a s/ill that ma n y new teac h e r s often strug gl e with. #arm e n alre a d y see m s very comfort a bl e with this import a n t s/ill. !oving into the classroo m , it was import a n t for me to see that #arm e n was ma/ing a conscious effort to me e t the ne e d s of all her stud e n t s . I was fortun a t e to obs erv e #arm e n ma/ e the s e conscious decisions in her practice throu g h thou g h tful differe n ti a t e d instruction and ass e s s m e n t . She too/ the time to get to /now her stud e n t s2 nee d s and learning styles and provid e d the m with clear instruction s that would ens ur e their succe s s . ,er lesso n s in Social Studie s were cre a tiv e and fun. I /now that the stud e n t s in the class at time s were Etric/ed2 into learning import a n t conc e p t s and mat e ri al while having fun throu g h inter a c tiv e activities and instruction. It was also wond e rful to see #arm e n teac hin g in sub.ect s outsid e of her comfort 1one or speciali1ation. I had the pleas u r e of watchin g #arm e n on ma n y occasion s teac h 0igital #iti1ens hip. !s. $iancarlo too/ gre a t care in prep a rin g lesson s that were me a nin gful and relev a n t to our stud e n t s . I believ e she also had a gre a t de al of fun teac hin g the class. #arm e n2s confide n c e in the classro o m and how to de al with stud e n t discipline continu e s to grow. She is self- ass ur e d and und er s t a n d s when to call upon ad ministr a tio n and what issue s to handle on her on. #arm e n has shown absolut ely no signs of compla c e n c y and strives to improv e in all asp e c t s of teac hin g. She does not ta/e for grant e d her stre n g t h s in planning and curriculu m /nowled g e but reflects on how she can continuo u sly improv e. +eco min g a reflective practition e r is indicative of her mat u rity and dedica tio n to teac hin g. %astly, I would be remis s if I did not includ e how wond e rful of a staff me m b e r #arm e n has be e n. She has literally volunt e e r e d for everyt hin g9 She has shown a pas sion for ma/ing a differe n c e in our stud e n t s both in and out of the classro o m . *s an ad ministr a t o r when I am searc hin g for a new staff me m b e r I love seein g candid a t e s that want to be a part of everyt hin g. I think that what PS3 has ultim a t el y show n m e is that I can do it. As I mill around the school, passing by stud e n t s and staff and s miling or gree tin g the m as I walk, I feel like a teach er. As Im sitting in staff, grade- le el, and club m e e ti n g s , and sharing m y thoug h t s ! c o n c er n s ! s t ories , I feel like a teach er. "he n Im m e dia tin g a disput e betw e e n two #$- year- old girls who wont learn a single thing in any of their class e s until the y hash things out, I feel like a teach er. As I stand in front of a room of $% stud e n t s who ha e gi e n m e their att e n tio n so long as I mak e it worth- while for the m , and whe n I settle down a roo m of $% stud e n t s who are all roaring with laught er and yelling about a &oke so m e o n e told, I am a teach er. 'his e(p erie n c e has show n m e that it isnt &ust a practicu m any m o r e . Althou g h ther e is so m uc h mor e to learn, I am fully capable and ready to be a teach er, and that is what I think has surpris e d m e the mos t.
