Peer Review Draft 1 Persuasive Letter Peer Reviewer _____________________ Author ____________________________

Directions for the peer review: Read the letter and write comments on this sheet and on the letter based what is asked. At the end of the class, you will turn in this sheet stapled to the letter you reviewed.

The purpose of this peer review is NOT to fill in the blanks and mark everything to fulfill the assignment; the purpose is to find weaknesses in the writing and to tell the author how to improve the letter.

YOU WILL BE GRADED ON THE QUALITY OF YOUR PEER REVIEW, SO DO YOUR BEST WORK AND ASK YOUR TEACHER FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT.

1. Thesis: Read the thesis. Does the solution seem reasonable? Specific? Write comments here. Dont just say good; say why in particular it is good. Remember that a thesis represents the central purpose of the text. If you find yourself struggling with a thesis, ask yourself this question: if I read my thesis to someone who had no concept of the my argument, would they be able to understand the purpose of my letter?

2. Persuasive writing structure: Read the letter from beginning to end. Write down on this paper what you see in the letter. Every answer needs an explanation.

Whats the problem that is motivating the person to write?

What solution does the author promote?

Examine the solution: does it seem reasonable? Workable? Specific?

What is the other sides best point? Is it the best point?

How does the author refute/disprove the best point? How could the refutation be improved?

3. Detail: On the letter, mark anywhere that the author has made general comments but has not provided specific detailfacts, statistics, stories, etc. (Author: do more research to add detail to support your opinions.) Also, mark any place where the logic is questionablemaking claims that have not been justified, name calling, ignoring data, etc. Remember: an argument is different than an opinion; an argument is backed up by data/facts (Logos), and the specific points support one another.

4. Format: Using the handout you received that shows letter format, look at the following list and check the answer that applies: heading, incl. date _________yes __________no inside address _________yes __________no salutation _________yes __________no three paragraphs, min. _________yes __________no full left block _________yes __________no correct spacing _________yes __________no closing _________yes __________no signature _________yes __________no

Author: Take these suggestions and improve your letter. Also use what we are learning in class to improve your letter. Here are the specs for the Final Draft (due _____).
