Computer software is categorized into either application software or system software. Application software, also known as application packages, are sets of programs designed for specific tasks like payroll or exam results processing. System software, also known as system packages, are sets of general programs that control computer operations like data input/output and running application programs to make the computer system more effective and efficient for users. System software provides advantages and conveniences for application programmers and other computer users.
