Motion is an objects change in position relative to another object, or reference point.

The object that appears to stay in place is called a reference point. Motion is relative to some point.

Speed is the rate of change of distance over time.

The SI unit for speed is meters per second (m s!. "ilometers per hour (#m h!, feet per second (ft s!, and miles per hour (mi h! are other units commonly used to e$press speed.

Average speed =

Total distance total time

Recognizing Speed on a Graph Speed can be sho%n on a graph of distance versus time.

Instantaneous Speed: the rate of motion at any given instant or moment. Constant Speed& ' speed that doesnt vary (e$& a car traveling on the free%ay using cruise

The speed of an object in a particular direction is called velocity.

Scalar& Magnitude (number and unit! only

Speed is an e$ample of a scalar. Vector& Magnitude (number and unit! and +irecetion. ,elocity is an e$ample of a vector. Speed and velocity are t%o different terms %ith t%o different meanings. ,elocity must include a reference direction.

Changing Velocity: -ou can thin# of velocity as the rate of change of an objects
position. 'n objects velocity can change if either the direction or speed changes.

Acceleration: The rate at %hich velocity is changing over time.

If either speed or direction changes; then the object is accelerating.

Three ways acceleration can take place.

.. The speed increases (positive acceleration! /. The speed decreases (negative acceleration! 0. The direction changes (centripetal acceleration!
